Fort St.George is the first British fortress in India is an important historical and marvelous landmark in Chennai. It was built by British 
East India Company in 1640 AD and under the supervision of Francis Day and Andrew Cogan. As it was completed on St. George's day on 23rd April of 1640, it was named as Fort St. George. The Fort is housed with Fort Museum and St. Mary's Church.
Fort St.George Museum was formally opened to the public in 1948. The Fort museum has ten galleries which is spread on three floors. The ground floor of Fort Museum has three galleries.
The first gallery has medieval weapons, guns, pistols, swords and many more such things are displayed here. The second gallery has East India Company's ceremonial uniforms made of wool are displayed. The document gallery has some original writings of famous personalities of the past who are part of Madras History. One can find many portraits of past governors on the portrait gallery. Some fascinating perspectives old Madras and other parts of South India are depicted on second and third floors.
The Miscellany Gallery has various objects which includes silverware of churches from St. Mary's Church which was donated by Elihu Yale and silverware from Zion Church are displayed here. The Indo-French Gallery has various antiques which are on display includes clocks, stamps etc.
The coin gallery has a great number and variety of coin collections issued by French, Presidential and unified mints of British, Dutch, Danish etc which are worth to watch at coin gallery.
There is a Marble statue of Cornwallis (1880) which is a 14.5 ft tall statue which was placed in front of the museum, was carved by Thomas Banks which was a masterpiece depicts the scene of handling over the two sons of Tippu as hostages which brings back the Carnatic wars before the eyes.
Fort St George's towering flagstaff is over 150' high and even today it is the tallest in India. You can visit Fort St George Chennai from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. It is closed on Friday's and the entrance fee for Indians is Rs. 5/- and Rs.100/- for others.
