Connemara Public Library in Chennai


In this article, I am welcome to say about the Connemara library. This library is one of the most oldest library in which all the books are available to get the knowledge. This library has an excellent books which was very rare at the nation. This library situated in Chennai at the important part of the city. Lets see more about this article.

connemaraConnemara is a public library which is located in Chennai at Egmore. This library was established in the year of 1890. This public library has all type of Tamil Language book materials over all sorts of editions. This library was compiled in the mid of 12th century. In this library, all sorts of national level of books has been displayed. The newspaper of the periodicals published in India over centuries has been saved and stored in their library. It was one of the greatest and famous library in Chennai. The old publications reports the history of India and Indians who worked for their nation. Those words were remarkable and memorable.

This library has been serves as depository library for the United Nation. The situation of this building were once been complex over here. That was called "The Pantheon". After some period that complex has been re-established into library in 1973. There was a vast collection of books, periodicals hall, sections of text books, video room, reference room, and Indian Language books over one entire room has been developed.

History of Connemara Public Library


This was a great history over in India. This library starts in 1861. That time there were hundreds of books has been found in Hailey bury college. The effort taken by the Madras Government to get back those hundred's of books has been succeeded. The books has been placed in Madras Museum. Till the date of 1890, it has been placed and taken seriously to care about those books. During that time period Lord Connemara was the Governor. Then the library become as public in 1890 which was named Connemara Public Library in Chennai.

Collections in Connemara Public Library


There was an Act 1954 called Provision of Delivery of Books and Newspapers under public libraries announced that every publishers in India should compulsorily send a copy of every publication to the Connemara Public Library. Though there was some good number of publications and periodicals of United Nation has been revealed. Under this Asian development bank were also receive a copies. The State Government had conducted a budget depend on libraries and its funds. Because of these, there was a good result in that time.

The library started to collect very rare collection of books and started to store in this placed. Some of the names of those books are
1. The 1608 edition of bible.
2. In 1678 edition of Hourtus Indicus Malabaricus and its 12 volumes.
3. The 1696 edition of Voyage to Suratt.
4. The 1711 edition of account of the trade in India.
5. The 1717 edition of account of the religion and government, learning and economy and more.
6. The 1768 edition of Flora Indica.
7. The 1801 edition of plutarch's lives.
8. The 1881 edition of census of India.

Details of Membership in Connemara Public Library


Above the age of 17 can be a member of the Connemara library. The person should be citizen of Chennai. The person should be deposit of 300 rupees. During his/her membership, he/she can be take upto 6 books to his/her home. The returning period of books is between 14 days.

Timings of Connemara Public Library:

Except Sunday – 9.00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.
Sunday's – 9.30 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.
