Vasundhara Das is an Indian singer and an actress in the film industry. Apart from the music career she has acted in many films like Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam films. Vasundhara holds the pride of being a co – founder of the worked music band Arya. As a play back singer in the Tamil film industry she is highly renowned for her metallic voice in the Rahman's musical Shankar film Mudhalvan which made her sing the song “Shakalaka Baby" which is also her debut song. Thereafter, she established herself a successful woman in her career and took singing as her full time profession. Apart from her other skills Vasundhara Das has sung many Hindi and Tamil songs as well.

Early life and family of Playback Singer Vasundhara Das


Vasundhara das belong to Banglore in Karnataka and was born in a Hebbar Iyengar family. India in the year 1977. From the child hood days she was very active. She finished her schooling at the Cluny Convent High School in the same city and continued her graduate degree at the Mount Carmel College in Bangalore. She got graduated in Economics and Mathematics with a bachelor's degree. This made her first half of her life to be spent in the Bangalore city.

She got involved with music in her early age of childhood – at the age of 6 making her trained in Hindustani classical music. As a child, she never showed hype of interest in music; wherein she used to avoid and skip music classes by running away to home. But later she started developing passion towards music and ultimately when she reached her college days, she profound that she had some in built interest in music and instruments. This self – interest made her join the all – band girl in her college days. She always had an interest with playing guitar, for she was able to play Flamenco Strums on her Guitar. She was multi – lingual, speaking Tamil, Hindi, English and Kannada.

Vasundhara's main influence on music was Hindustani – Rock and Funk and Spanish musical scores.

After being spent her first half of her life in Bangalore city, she came from the Banglore City and entered Mumbai metropolitan. In Mumbai she founded Arya which is the musical band along with the support of Roberto Narain. This band had various experts in various fields ranging from Hindustani and carnatic classical music to Jazz, Latin, Rock and Pop. This music band proved to be one successful organization having Roberto Narain to play the Drums and Vasundhara to provide western and Indian vocals for the songs from the album. So the band named Arya was broadly classified under world music. Arya's first performance was at the prestigious music festival La Mar de Musicas in Spain in the year 2003. A year later in September 2004, the band toured the United States of America. She has recorded her own album of non – filmy origin songs in many languages like French, English, Kannada, Tamil, Hindi and Telugu.

Film industry :


Apart from being a part of the music albums and bands and gaining in success, her first break through in the cine industry came out through the Rahmanic music “Shakalaka Baby" for the Shankar directed film Mudhalvan in which the lead roles were taken over by Arjun and Manisha Koiralla. This particular song of Vasundhara took over her to reach greater heights and was the most sought singer of that time for songs that needed high through put and metallic voice. After her first debut with Rahman, she later recorded many songs with Rahman in both Hindi and Tamil. In tamil, many films recorded Vasundhara's voice; some of her notable movies that had her songs were Aegan starring Ajith and Nayathara; “Kattipudi Kattipudi da" from the movie Kushi for Vijay and Jyotika; Boys which was again a Shankar directed movie set to the tunes of Rahman; Kanda Naal Mudhal, Anniyan, Manmadhan and citizen in the year 2001. Vasundhara has lent her voice for the musical legend Illaiyaraaja for the song “Pattu viral thottu vittadaal" in a Tamil movie called Dhanush directed by A.M.Gurumani.


It was in the year 2001, where she got her first break in Bollywood and came into limelight with the film Aks for the song “Rabba Rabba". This song of hers made her a nominee for the best female play back singer in Hindi for the film fare awards in the year 2002. Some hindi films that she gave in voices for songs are Ugly aur Pagli in 2008, Ek Dastak in the year 2005, Kudiyon ka Hai Zamana in the same year and film star in the year 2003. Vasundhara lent voices also to Malayalam and Kannada songs like Vajram (malayalam) in the year 2004 and Lankesh Patrike for Kannada language in the year 2002. Vasundhara has sung an English song in the hidi film Laggan for Rahman which portrayed the British character Racheal Shelley. Her most famous fast number in Hindi song “it's the time to disco" for the movie Kal Ho Na Ho came out to be huge hit.

Acting as her Career:


When Vasudhara made singing her profession, she had many chances of being a part of the acting field for she did well in that field too. Vasundhara's first debut was a very high project that she could not refuse it. The first project that made Vasundhara act was for Hey Ram starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role in the year 1999. This movie depicted Vasundhara as the second wife of Kamal Haasan after his first wife Rani Mukarjee was shot dead in the story. So this made her a good scope in the acting industry. After this chance, she was actually considered to play the lead role in Manir Ratnam's Alaipayuthey opposite R.Madhavan which was later taken over by Shalini. After these chances, she got chance in the Malayalam film industry alongside the universal super start Mohan Lal for the film Ravana Prachu. Again a Tamil film, Citizen was given over to her where she was supposed to act as the heroine against Ajith and again a lead role opposite Dharshan Tugdeep in the Kannada movie Lankesh Pathrike. She acted for a Hindi film – Monsoon wedding too. Apart from the cine industry, she appeared in the Hindi T.V. serial named Rab ne Bane de Jodi.
