St. Georges Cathedral is the headquarters of CSI diocese of Madras for protestant Christians. The church is an ancient artistic church designed by British Colonel J.LCaldwell. The church is a very sacred holy place for conducting worship and Sunday service. The church premises outside is used for conducting marriages and receptions for memorable celebrations. This church was built and opened in 1815 A.D. It is one of the ancient and popular church in the city of Chennai which competes with its beautiful artistic architecture in ancient style with the world's top most Cathedral churches for its beauty. The church was designed and architecture'd by British colonel Colonel J.LCaldwell and built by Captain De Havilland. This church was built during the period of British East India Company.
The church was inaugurated by the Anglican bishop of Calcutta Rev. Thomas Fanshaw in 1816 A.D. Though the church was inaugurated in the year 1816, the service was conducted from 1815 A.D. The south eastern part of the church was separated and kept for cementry. The church turned into the Cathedral of Madras (i.e )the diocese of Madras and the headquarters of CSI for Christian protestant people of Chennai from the year 1835.Artistic And Precious Things Dedicated For The Church:

Valuable Things Dedicated To The Church:
The directors of the British East India Company dedicated turret clocks which has been placed facing in three directions of the church which is 139 feet height.
The altar table is dedicated by MS. De La Fond, bells and other sounding devices were given by Mr.Banbury. The holy chalice and paten were dedicated by Lt. Col. Herbert St. Clare Carruthers in 1908 it is made in 18 carat gold and is used for holy communion. The chalice has diamonds embedded in the form of cross. There is a pipe organ oldest and amazing organ is still there in the church for the congregation to sing and praise with songs.
A pair of stained glasses is placed on the either sides of the altar of Cathedral adds more beauty to the church. The two glasses depicting the main events that happened in the life of Jesus Christ. One glass is stained with the pictorial representation of the baptism of Jesus Christ given by John the baptist, it also contains the picture of holy spirit ascending from heaven in the form of dove. The other stained glass contains the picture of Mary the Magdalene. When sunlight falls on these glasses it reveals its ancient artistic work in the formation of hues.
On all sides inside the church are the statues of famous saints, pastors, Educationalists and Reverent. There were also huge tablets near these statues who they are and providing information about them. These were kept as memorials for their remembrance. This church was Anglican basically but later turned to CSI (Church Of South India).Details And Information About Today's Cathedral Church:
Now the church is under the control of the Bishop of CSI Madras Diocese Rt. Rev. V. Devasahayam. The church has regular services conducted every Sunday in two languages one in English and another in Tamil. There is also evening services during Sunday's.
