Location of Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary


The sanctuary covers an area of 175 sq. km and is located at 52 kilometers away from Tezpur town in the Sonitpur District of Assam in India. Tezpur town is situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. The town is also famous for many historic temples and monuments.

What to see in Sonai Rupai


The main attraction of the sanctuary are Elephant and Indian bison.The Indian bison roaming around the grassland of the sanctuary gives thrilling experience to the visitors which can hardly be seen in any other place. The other animals found in the sanctuary are deer, one-horned rhinoceros, leopard, tiger and some rare species of cats. Various hill birds, native and migratory birds are also found here.

The ideal time to visit the sanctuary is from the November to March. During this time there is no rain and the weather is pleasant so that one can enjoy the true natural beauty and can spend some time with nature.

The best accommodation is at the Inspection Bunglow of the Forest Department at Bura-Chapori. Government tourist lodges and private hotels are also available in Tezpur town. Some of the hotels are Luit Hotel, Basumati Hotel, Central Lodge, Pradyut Hotel, Hotel KRC Palace, Hotel Grand City, etc. which offers good accommodation.

How to reach Sonai Rupai


The nearest airport to reach the sanctuary is in Saloni which is 10 km from Tezpur town and is 181 km from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam.
The nearest railhead is Rangapara which is 60 km away from Bhalukpong in Sonitpur district.
Tezpur town is well connected by road to all the major states of the country. Buses or private coaches are available from all parts of the state.
