Kazi Nazrul Islam - Rebel Poet of Bengal
Kazi Nazrul Islam was one of the famous Bengali Poet of Bengal of all time whose poetic works, music expressed strong protest against the British rule in Bengal. Personal Profile of Kazi Nazrul Islam
Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on 25th May in the year 1899 in Churulia village in the Burdwan district of West Bengal. He was born in a poor Muslim family and is second of three sons and a daughter. His father's name was Kazi Fakir Ahmed and mother's name was Zaheda Khatun. He lost his father at a very young age when he was only nine years old.Early Life of Kazi Nazrul Islam
Little Nazrul used to attend the local religious school, run by the mosque, and there he studied the Quran and other Muslim scriptures. At the age of ten after his father's demise he joined local mosque as a caretaker, where his father used to work, to support his family financially. But after few months he again joined his school and completed his class ten. In the year 1917 at the age of eighteen he joined the Indian Army. During his army days Nazrul Islam used to read extensively the poetry, novels of other great personalities Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra, Sarat Chandra and was very much attracted by their writings. In the year 1919 his first prose work namely "Baunduler Atmakahini" was published and soon after that his first poem "Mukti" was published in the same year. In the year 1920 he left the army and came down to Kolkata and joined the Bengal Muslim Literary Society as a writer. Soon he became popular for his great poetic works and songs and rose to fame with other Muslim Poets.
His poetry and other literary works used to express strong protests against slavery, communalism, feudalism and above all the cruelism of British Raj in India. Some of his famous poems include Sanchita, Chakrabak, Satbhai Champa, Nirjhar, Agni Bina, and Novels like Bandhan Hara, Kuhelika. He has also written many short stories and some plays/dramas, which are also very famous even today.
Nazrul Islam has also composed nearly three thousand songs, which are popular as 'Nazrul Geeti'.
This famous poet passed away on 29th August in the year 1976.
