How a single movie has promoted tourism in Tamil Nadu

A few months ago, there was this fabulous movie called "Ponniyin Selvan" that was released in Tamil Nadu. It is actually a historical movie. It had the famous Aishwarya Rai and a galaxy of other actors in it. It was directed by the ace director, Manirathnam, whose name is so famous all over India. One was told that this Tamil movie had a Hindi dubbing and a Telegu version as well.

It is still on in some parts of Tamil Nadu. What happened after this movie was released is more interesting. Since the movie had several references to the erstwhile Chola and Pandian kingdoms, a massive number of people went in search of whatever remained in these places. For instance, tourism in and around Tanjore increased by a factor of ten, since the people were so keen to find out something related to the great king, Raja raja Cholan, whose empire included countries like Sri Lanka. The temple built by him stands tall even today, several centuries after it was built.

Similarly, the great Madurai, the third largest city of Tamil Nadu and reportedly the capital of the Pandiya also saw a massive influx of tourists. So, these kinds of movies are really very good, at taking the very young, to historical places. It is indeed a great experience to see the renewed interest in history pertaining to a particular place. The movie is based on a classic novel written by Kalki, a very famous author.

However, the movie has not only managed to relate to the novel, but also bring in the dance and the drama that is part of any Tamil movie.

It is good to note that a movie made people to visit various places in the state. In fact, movie is a good media to introduce any new concept to people. These days youth will have a hero as an Icon and they will follow him and do whatever he does. Thus the culture of the people will change based on movies.
When we see a historical movie and if we get attracted to that places, we will definitely make an attempt to see those places. I have visited many pilgrim centers after watching them in a video or hearing from somebody about it.

Yes, indeed, films can and do promote tourism in a State. I read a similar thing happening after the movie Baahubali was released. Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad retained some of the magnificent pieces that were used in the film and these were a great attraction for fans. It seems the Vazhachal Falls in Kerala was used as the backdrop for a scene and it became a hugely popular tourist spot. Many picturesque scenes were shot in the backdrop of the Sahyadri Mountain range in Western India. Then there was the Golconda Fort, and it is reported that it was used as the Mahishmati kingdom depicted in the movie.

There have also been movie locations of international films, such as the James Bond movies, that boosted tourism.

Cinema is a medium which influences our lives in a variety of ways. Sometimes some films are so impressive that they influence the whole society in a big way. Probably in this case the film mentioned by the author has done that job successfully. Anyway, it is a very good thing that the film has created a positive vibe among the tourists and encouraged them to visit the places depicted in the said film.
