A flying kiss in the Parliament
While we were studying Parliamentary Procedure during our initial training (and also at later stage), we came to know that in the Parliament, the most important events are Joint Sessions of the Parliament (happened only thrice to discuss three bills so far), Impeachment of a Supreme Court judge (happened only once) and the 'No-Confidence' motion (only in Lok Sabha). 'No-Confidence' motion is of utmost importance and the ultimate weapon in the hand of the opposition who can criticize the Government on various counts and the Government side, led by the Prime Minister, is duty-bound to answer the charges of the opposition. The speeches during the 'No Confidence' motion have become more important in the present era of direct media telecast. People can easily judge the performance of the opposition leaders in the Parliament.
But during the last 'No-Confidence' motion in July, we saw Rahul Gandhi, a very important speaker from Congress which had brought the motion, threw a flying kiss, while leaving the Parliament immediately after his speech.
The Government side immediately got the opportunity. Leaving aside discussion on issues, it pounced upon the incident of flying kiss and Rahul Gandhi's departure from the House immediately after his speech. The Government side concluded that Rahul was not at all serious during this most-important debate in Parliament.
The activities of Congress leaders have been aptly analysed by Shri Pinaki Misra, an MP of BJD which keeps equal distance from both Modi and anti-Modi camps. Shri Misra said during the debate: "I have always believed that the Congress party is adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They are also very adept at cutting off their nose to spite their face. They know that every time the PM has got up to speak on the floor of this House, he has pushed the Congress party through the shredder... This defies common sense, logic, political sense..."
The erudite statement of Shri Misra was again proved to be prophetic when Congress staged a walk-out while the Prime Minister was speaking. The party has behaved childishly during the entire debate.
