The history of Spencer plaza dates back to 1863-64 originally it was constructed as a departmental store under the British rule in India. This proves the Spencer plaza to be the oldest shopping mall in Chennai. It was the first of its kind in the total Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka). It was established by Charles Durant and J.W. Spencer. A Few years later Eugene Oakshott shifted the stores from the original building to a new one which was an example of Indian Indo Saracenic style of architecture which was designed by W.N. Pogson. In 1985 the building was destroyed in fire. The present Spencer Plaza is built in the same place as the old one and was promoted by Mangal Tirth estates ltd. Chennai Spencer plaza has now became a major hangout for the people of Chennai and also attracts many tourists for its unique architecture and old looks with every new brand.
