The place contains artistic houses of people lived in Tamil Nadu during the ancient times their mode of work their sculptures and also wonderful shopping stalls of hand made handicrafts, clips, ear rings, bags etc. It will be a wonderful experience to buy stuffs which are hand made.

It is a project started by the Madras Craft Foundation it was opened for the visitors from 1996 December. It occupies a area of ten acres lush green along the ECR road.Various Arts in Dakshina Chitra
Folk Performing tradition of south India has been severely challenged by television, cinema, westernization, and changing lifestyles in today's generation. Folk performances that were extremely popular and regular in village festivals of South India are now facing deploitation. Folk dancers are turning to other works for their daily food. Because of that our culture will come to extinct and will be forgotten by the upcoming generation. Dakshina Chitra conducts regular folk performances and encourage them to develop their skills in folk dancing. They also encourage students and children to learn folk dances and folk performances during Summer Camps and conducts Children's Festivals so that out coming generation will come to know about our culture. A school was started for the village children to learn the dance systematically. It also presents a shadow puppet show program during Saturday, Sunday and festival times for kids to enjoy. They have also trained their own troupes of village children in Devarattam. The boys troupe has performed in TV Programs and at cultural events conducted in various institutions. The younger girls' troupe is undergoing their training every Saturday and Sunday.

Dakshina Chitra is a museum art and ancient tradition of south India. The place is built with 17 kinds of homes which depicts the ancient life style of south Indians. You can see and enjoy by taking photographs these houses the long streets with lantern stands and explore exhibitions which contains the vessels they used the weapons they used for hunting and for war different types of lands described in Tamil poems written by great poets etc. You can also interact with village artists and can ask their experience in folk dances how they learned when they first made their debut. The entire area is filled with artistic houses of ancient South Indians perfectly constructed how people during olden days have lived. Even the streets are made in such a way that in olden days how it was. The place also gives a brief details about the occupation of ancient South Indians and also the way of eating their tradition and culture their dresses their wealth their bravery and more. The exhibitions and stalls contains things that are very traditionally styled and hand made The hand made bangles, ear rings, bands, artistic things for decorating our homes pot made of clay etc. People who have artistic taste will definitely have a nice shopping in this place.
