Since Madras was not that much popular in the 17th century, the port place exactly where the port now, was used for military and some financial purpose. Many traders such as the British, French and Portuguese were in the place for building St. Thomas harbor. The British built the port St. George in the exact place and later the British expanded it to The Madras port. The French admiral captured this place and the surrounding villages; he is called as La Bourbonnais. But later he returned back this place to the British with the port of madras.
