Pillay was born for Tamil parents Nagalingam Pillay and Andalamma who settled in Maharashtra due to their work life. His father was working for the central government in Ordinance Factory Khadki, Maharashtra. So their family got settled there in Maharashtra in the staff colony when he was young. He has lot of craze towards the game and started playing hockey with his friends in the colony with broken sticks and balls. Where he learned more and more basics and fun about hockey in that place. His mother encouraged him and all his brothers in playing hockey. He is fluent in Tamil, English, Hindi and Marathi. His mother tongue is Tamil.
Dhanraj's elder brother Ramesh is also a hockey player who was playing in the international matches for our team India. At the 80's pillay moved to Mumbai to build his career in hockey field. Learned the striking skills in hockey through his brother and became a successful player in the team of India. He was trained and teached by the Indian coach Joaquim Carvalho. He made his first debut in international match represented in team India in 1989 for Allwyn Asia Cup held in Delhi.

His International career for playing and taking Indian hockey team all over the world started from the year 1989 to 2004. He has given his sportive performance in 339 matches and has hit 170 goals in his international match career. He is the first Indian hockey player who played in four Olympic hockey matches, four championship and four world cups, four asia cup matches. He was the only Indian player who was in eleventh position in the sydney world cup hockey games in the year 1994.

India's one of the most prestigious and famous award for sport players the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award has been awarded to him in the year 1999-2000. He also won another award from the government of India Padmashri award in the year 2000. Also awarded player of the tournament award in 2002 in Cologne, Germany for champions trophy.
He was the captain of Indian Hockey Team when they won Asian cup for the year 2000. He is the only Indian player who has played in many international games representing India for a period of long time. His excellent achievement and strategic playing skill of hockey has given many victories for the team in many places and took the proud of India all over the world. He also started an academy for hockey in Mumbai after he got retired from the team. For starting the academy he used to collect empty or wasted plastic printer catridges and sold it to a European recycling company.
