Mathangi is an Indian play back singer and a person whose life has inextricably intertwined with music. Starting from an advertising profession to a full time play back singer, her dreams and aspirations have traversed the upper and lower octaves of life. Apart from music and singing being her profession she revolves around the fact that she has been blessed to meet so many wonderful musicians, who have given het the necessary fillip to grow and perform. Mathangi has sung for various languages and has been a versatile singer in all the ever sung songs for the cine industry.

Childhood and Background of Mathangi Playback singer


Mathangi was born in one city - Calcutta and was raised in 3 different cities – Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai which thus made her quite familiar of all the cultures that are versatile in and around India. This enabled her to expand her musical journey that were spanning in different cultures. During her formative years; being born in a South Indian family with deep interest in carnatic music – Mathangi had the privilege to listen to good music since her childhood. Her parents were Mr Rajashekar and her mom being Mrs Prema Rajashekar; wherein her mother held a masters degree in music and thus her family was pretty sure of puttiing her Carnatic music classes even at the age of 6.

Mathangi persuaded her schooling – early education in Delhi and that was the place where Mathangi started her carnatic music learning interest. She started her early learning interest with her Guru called Smt Rama Devi at Delhi. Mathangi completed her graduation in Bangalore and continued to learn music under Smt Neela Rama gopal. The family later moved over to Chennai to continue her graduation with a post graduate degree and her music tutelage under Smt Suguna Purushottaman. She also made her well versed in the western classical music for a year from Mr Jabez whom she considers her voice trainer and her beloved Guru. In order to increase her versatility, Mathangi started learning Hindustani music under Mrs Meghana Dandekar; also later learnt under Ms Subha Joshi and Mrs Aditi Upadhayay. She considers that beginning to lay a foundation in Hindustani has been one of the most rewarding and eye opening experiences for Mathangi.

At the age of 13; Mathangi was awarded with the prestigious government of India scholarship to further her training in carnatic music till she persuaded her training till she completed her collegiate studies.

Career and Livelihood of Playback singer Mathangi


Mathangi after completing her masters profile with her education; she started off her career in a leading advertising multinational agency. This was when Mathangi was asked to be a part of the play back industry. It was when she was offered with an opportunity to sing her first solo for the film Choklet under the music composition of Deva for the song “Anju Mani" starring Prashanth in the lead role. She made a duet in the same movie for the song “Kokari kara giri giri".

Over the last 9 years, Mathangi had the privilege of lending voices for many songs under the composition of the Oscar winning A R Rahman, Isai Gnani Illaiyaraaja and of course the younger generation music directors like YUvan Shankar Raja, Karthik Raja, Bhavadharini, Harris Jeyaraj, D Imman, Sirpi, Devi Sri Prasad, Joshua Sridhar and Sabesh Murali as well.

Apart from the leading musicians, she has also worked under Vidhya Sagar, Bharadwaj, S A Raj Kumar, Ramesh Vinayakam, Bharini, Dheena and many others.

Some of her popular Tamil numbers are “Apdi Paakruduna Vena" for the film Ivvan, “Hot Party" from the film Tamizhan starring Vijay and Priyanka Chopra in the lead role, “Katru Yenbadu" from the film Perazhagan having Surya and Jyotika in the lead roles, “Kastoori Maanilamey" for the film Azhagiya Theeye, “Janavari Madam" from the film 7 g Rainbow Colony under the composition of Yuvan Shankar Raja with Ramakrishna and Sonia Agarwal in the lead roles, “Kisu Kisu Manusha" from the film Giri, “X Machi Y machi" from the film Ghajini, “Thacuko Thchuko" from Ponniyin Selvan, “midukaanavey" from aanai, “aathadi aathadi magarasi" from the film Tirupathi with Ajith and Sadha in the lead role, “Dai Dai nee Patchai Kudhirai" to name a few of her worthy numbers.

She has sung a few popular songs in Telugu too; some of them are “A Vachi B Vachi" and “Agniskalana" for the film Chatrapati under the composition of Mr Keeravani, “Kanne Pilla" from the movie Thotti Gang set to the tunes of Devi Sri Prasad, “Ko ko ko Koyila" from the film Keelugurram wherein the music was set to the composition of S A Raj Kumar, “Mutthama" for the film Hungaama under the music composition of K Reddy and many more wonderful songs to add onto her list.

Mathangi has sung for Himesh Reshamiya's composition in Tamil for the film Bommalattam and for Sivakasi in Telugu. Some of her Kannada songs are from the films Rama Krishna and 123 more recently the song Nalle Nalle o Nalle for the music director Mr Guru Kiran. Mathangi sings for many private albums, devotional, non devotional and her first solo number “Raga Sudha" in Malayalam was released last year in the film Seetha Kalyanam under the music direction of Play back singer turned music director Mr Srinivas.

Mathangi has also sung for many jingles that are put up in many advertisements in all 4 southern languages for ad film makers like Rajiv Menon and Roshini Chandran. She has sung in Hindi remix albums called as the “Club hits" by Mr Leslie Lewis of Colonial cousin fame, the songs being Bicchua and Paree hoon mein. Mathangi is as well trained in Carnatic, Hindustani and western classical music and has sung in Late Shri L Vaidyanathan's carnatic world music fusion albums. She is the lead vocalist in Amit Heri's (of Morning raga fame) fusion band.

Mathangi has made a number of stage shows at various countries throughout the globe and yet she has proven to be one among the versatile play back singer of the Indian film industry. There has been a lot of live in concerts that Mathagi has delivered in India. She has tried out those success concerts in various countries like United States of America, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Sri Lanka.
