Vani Jayaram is a renowned Indian female play back singer and has sung more than 8,000 songs in 14 different languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi and Hindi. Vani Jayaram was born in Vellore, Tamil Nadu into a family of musicians. Vani's mother is the disciple of Ranga Ramanuja Iyer, a great exponent in Veena. She had 8 siblings out of which 5 were girls and the rest 3 were boys. Kadaloor Sreenivasa Iyengar taught Vani's sister music and she was quite fascinated by her observation and grasping power. He taught her a few Dikshitar Kirtis when she was hardly at the age of 5. So even at an early age, she showed immense interest in music and this made her gain lot more knowledge with respect to classical and carnatic music.
In a family of all carnatic musicians, Vani always had a secret interest in a career for the film industry. Considered to be a child prodigy, Vani Jayaram acclaims to have recognized the different ragas of Indian classical music before the age of 5. Her voice was first heard on All India Radio, Madras (now Chennai) at the age of 8. It was a wide accepted fact that Vani was believed to be a child prodigy that even at such a young age; she was well versed in all the ragas and songs.
Vani Jayaram studied carnatic music under the tutelage of Kadalur Srinivasa Iyengar, T.R.Balasubranian and R.S.Mani. Her Hindustani classical music guru was Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan.
Vani was married to Jayaram and took over from Vellore and moved away leaving Tamil Nadu. After her marriage to Jayaram, she settled in Mumbai, where she realized her dream of making her career into film industry as a play back singer. Career and Livelihood of Vani Jayaram Playback Singer
In the year 1971, she realized her childhood ambition of becoming a film play back singer when the hindi film music director Vasant Desai chose her voice for the Hindi feature film Guddi. This particular movie recorded 3 songs at a stretch – Bol Re Papi Hara, a song based on the Hindustani Raga Miyan Malhar. This song of Vani made her instantly an household name of India. For that song, she was awarded the Tansen Samman for the best classical based song in a Hindi film, the Lions International Best Promising singer award, the all Indian cinegoers Association award, and the all India film goers association award for the best female play back singer in the year 1971.
She went on to sing a few songs each for music directors of Hindi Cinema including Chitragupt, Naushad (a classical song in Pakeezah and a duet with Asha Bhonsle in Aina), O.P.Nayyar (several songs from the film Khoon Ka Badla Khoon including duets with Mohammaed Rafi and also with Uttara Kelkar and Pushpa Pagdhare), R.D.Burman (a duet with Mukesh in the film Chhalia), Kalyanji, Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal, and Jaidev (a duet with Manna Dey in Parinay and also in Solwa Sawaan). Vani Jayaram initiated her fist recordin in the tamil industry for the music composer S.M.Subbaiah in the film Thaiyum Seiyum in the year 1973. Within a year, Vani shifted her residence to Chennai and soon became a sought after singer in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinemas. Besides Hindi and Tamil, Vani Jayaram recorded songs in many other Indian languages like Tulu, Gujrathi, Marathi, Haryani, Bengali and Vani especially had a huge repertoire in Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Oriya and Tamil. She has been awarded many prestigious awards for all her works in different languages for she could easily grasp all language words with ease.
One of her most famous songs in the Marathi film industry was “Runanu Bandhachy" is a duet that Vani sang with a classical Hindustani singer Kumar Ghandrava. This song was composed by Vani's mentor Vasant Desai for a Marathi drama called Dev Deenaghari Dhaavlaa. This song was written by Bal Kolhatkar.

• Shankara Bharanam, the telugu film scored by K.V.Mahadevan gave Vani Jayaram her second national award as the best female play back singer on the early 1080s.
