Sujatha is the granddaughter of Parur T.K.Narayana Pillai, the first chief minister of the erstwhile Travancore – Cochin State after independence. Her interest in music made her parents lend her into the field of carnatic music. Even as a child she learnt music and proved her versatility. This probably made her into limelight as Baby Sujatha who shared K.J.Yesudas's stage as a child artist in lending voices of children. She was a school girl then; who made her fame run throughout the world even as a school girl.
It is in general a very challenging thing to sing in the recording. It is very much necessary that a person should be mentally prepared to sing properly in the recording and all. Her first recording was done when Sujatha was in her sixth standard. This kid chance was bestowed by the famous music director of the Malayalam cine industry in the early 70s – M. K. Arjunan for the song “Kannezhuthy Pottuthuttu that transpired in the Malayalam movie – Tourist Bungalow.

Her career in the movie industry had its initiation even when she was a child. After gaining experience in making many stage shows as Baby Sujatha with the veteran playback singer and musician K.J.Yesudas; she entered into the film industry at the age of 11 by M.K.Arjunan in the year 1975. After which, she recorded songs for Shyam for the movie “Kamam Krodham Moham" and for “Aparadhi" given by the music director Salil Chowdary. In the mean time she was given n number of opportunities in many non film songs. Composer M.G.Radhakishnan got her these recording chances. The biggest hit among these albums was “Odakkuzhal Vili".
Her entry into the Tamil film industry started when she sang for the song “khadal oviyam kandhein" which was not included in the movie by which her first released song turned out to be “Kalai paniyil" for the movie Gayathri, starring the lead roles to be Rajinikanth and Sri Devi set to the tunes of Illayaraja. She sang half a dozen songs for Illayaraja before her marriage; some of the movies being – Kavikuyil, Johnny, Ilamai Kolangal etc.
In the year 1981, she took away from the playback singing industry as she was married. Her re – entry into the film industry was in the year 1988 all way through the song Kadathandan Ambadi following the super hit Chithram. Simultaneously she had been singing ad jingles in the latter years of the 80s for A.R.Rahman like Remanika sarees. Rahman gave her a chance to be the female lead voice for the song “pudhu vellai mazhai" in Roja – a Mani rathnam's movie. This song of her turned out to be a massive hit throughout the country after which she became the happening voice in the industry. Some of her other hit numbers were with rahman in many of his stupendous movies like Pudhia Mugam for which she sang “netru ellada maatram", Gentleman, Jeans, Minsaara Kanavu etc.
Sujatha also recorded some Hindi numbers such as “Dil hai Sanam" from chor chor, “Ishq Bina" from the movie Taal, “hai Janaa" for the film Pukar, “Eshwar allah" for earth and afforded vocals for the song “tum ho meri nighom". She has had many other notable songs all that were musically tuned by A.R.Rahman.
