Play back singer Hariharan was an instinctive Kerala born was brought up in Mumbai in a Tamil Brahmin family. Singer Hariharan was graduated in sciences and law with a bachelor's degree from the S.I.E.S College. Being brought up in a background filled with carnatic music, he had no much time to take music to be grasped in his blood. Son of legendary carnatic vocalist, Shrimati Alamelu and the late H.A.S. Mani, he had innate talents on music. Hariharan's first mentor was shrimati Alamelu from where he picked up carnatic rudimentary. Singer Hariharan set his passion for ghazals and Hindustani music had leaded him a long way down the musical lane; after which he learnt Urdu that helped him a lot in escalating his passion for ghazals.

The dawn of his career set forth in singing for many concert circuits and as a popular play back singer in many title songs for TV serials. Junoon was one among them which was very popular all over India. Hariharan was also given great recognition for his wonderful songs in the Indian TV serials that stood long in the heart of Indians. In the year 1977, he snared the first prize in the “All India Sur Singaar" competition. This had made his career come in lime light. After this opportunity Hariharan immediately signed in for the movie for which the late music director – Jaidev to sing for the Hindi movie Gamaan. His unveiling song “Ajeeb saane mujh par qarar" became such a big hit that he was awarded the best singer from the state government of Uttar Pradesh.

Hariharan in Tamil Film Industry


He entered into his very native Tamil film industry in 1992 with the unsullied music director A.R. Rahman for the movie Roja by Mani Ratnam in which he sang the song “tamizha tamizha". He also bagged the Tamil Nadu state government award for singing the song “uyire uyire" from the movie Bombay for A.R.Rahman in the year 1995. By now, he proved to be the finest artists in singing melody numbers and had given many hit songs throughout the year.

He had sung for many movies like taal, mudhalvan, indira, jeans, minsara kanavu, rangeela, muthu, iruvar, anbe aaruyire, sivaji, alaipayuthey, guru, kannathil muttamittal etc,. In the year 1998, he was bestowed with the National award for the song “Mere Dushman Mere Bhai" from the Hindi movie Border wherein the composing to this wonderful music had been taken over by Anu Malik. A couple of national awards had made his coat more prestigious. The second award was conferred for the song “Jiv Rangla" from the movie Jogwa set to the tunes by Ajay Atul in the year 2009.
