History and location of Kurukshetra


Kurukshetra is called the Land of Holy Legends as this is the place where the epic battle of Mahabharat took place, the battle which saw the most fearsome warrior and great men of history. Kurukshetra is a place of extremely high number of religious places. Located about 160 Kilometers North of Delhi, 39 Kilometers North of Karnal and 40 Kilometers South of Ambala this district of Haryana is located in the North Eastern part of Haryana.

Tourist places worth to visit in Kurukshetra


As mentioned before it contains numerous religious places which include about 360 Tirthas. These Tirthas not only have religious but also historical importance. Some of the primary Tirthas of Kurukshetra are Brahmsarovar or Kurukshetra Tank, Sannihit Tank, Sthanesvra Mahadev Mandir, Jyotisar, Baan-ganga, Bhisam Kund (Narkatari) Chandrakupa, Nabhi Kamal, Bhadarkali Mandir, Arnai Temple, Prachi Tirath Pehowa, Saraswati Tirath Pehowa, Prithduk Tirath Pehowa, Rantuk Yaksh Bir pipli, and Karan Ka Tila.

The above mentioned places are of importance in the Hindu religion but Kurukshetra also contains important religious and historical places in Islamic religion. These are Sheikh Chehli's tomb and Madrasah, Pathar Masjid and Chini Masjid. Kurukshetra is not only a place of historical and religious importance but is also a place for modern development of which Kurukshetra University, Regional Engineering College, Ayurvedic Medical College, Science Museum (Panorma) etc. are proofs.

For foreign tourists The Sri Krishna Museum in Kurukshetra is a must visit place. It showcases some ancient stone carvings among which the most prominent are of Lord Krishna and Lord Vishnu. This museum exhibits some rare collections from thousands of artists who lived in various historically important periods of history. Do check out the miniature paintings, palm leaf etchings and illustrated manuscripts. The special highlight of this museum are housed in the gallery number four which houses nine life-size scenes or dioramas of Krishna. Beautiful and traditionally Indian costumes and jewellery just add to the bewitching experience.

How to reach Kurukshetra

By Air- The nearest Airport to Kurukshetra are Delhi and Chandigarh airports. These are connected to Kurukshetra by road and railways. The distance of Kurukshetra from Delhi airport is about 160km for which a taxi will charge you at a rate of Rs 7-8 per kilometer.

By Railways- Kurukshetra is a major railway station connected through most of the major locals travelling in the northern region.
Train named Kalka Shtbdi travels from New Delhi railway station to Kurukshetra railway station starting from New Delhi at about 9.40 am daily
