The Amritsar district in Punjab (Punjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ) is one of the districts of Punjab which is situated in the northern part of India with Amritsar city serving as its administrative headquarters. Amritsar is the largest and holy city of Punjab. Amritsar was founded by Guru Ram Das Ji the fourth of Ten Sikh Gurus in 1574. The name of the city derives from the holy pool 'Amrit (nectar) Sarovar(sar-pool)'. Guru Arjan Dev Ji the fifth sikh guru the son and successor of Guru Ram Das raised a temple Darbar Sahib (also called in the name of Harimandir) in the middle of the pool, sanctified its waters and installed the first volume of the Sikh Scripture Guru Granth Sahib in the year 1604 in its inner sanctum. Maharaja Ranjit Singh the sikh ruler rebuilt the temple and gold plated some of the inner parts of Darbar Sahib and the doom of temple took 400kg of gold leaf and from then it came to be called as Golden Temple which is the highest temporal seat of Sikhs. During 18th century, Amritsar has witnessed many attacks and it has been destructed and rebuilt several times, but today it stands on the peak of the glory.
