Umaria was the part of Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh and in 1998 it was declare a separate administrative district. This district covers Bandhavgarh, Chandia, Manpur and Pali Tahsil (Revenue division). This district is basically cover more than 83% population of rural resident and huge portion of this distract having forest areas.

This district restrain good natural resources like coal, fire clay etc. South Eastern Coalfield Limited (SECL) a subsidiary of India's top coal producer company Coal India Limited is operating many Underground as well as Opencast mines coal mines. SECL has their Johilla Area Headquarters at Nowrozabad, which command the nearby coalmines located in Umaria, Nowrozabad and Pali area. The maximum revenue of this district comes from these SECL's coalmines.

Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) is operating Sanjay Gandhi Thermal Power Station located near Johilla River Birsinghpur. This thermal power plant capacity is 1340 Mega Watt which is the biggest in Madhya Pradesh.

Umaria also acknowledged for famous India's white tiger National Park “Bandhavgarh National Park" which is also located in the this district, just 30 Km from district headquarter.

Tahsil places of this district are well connected with state highway or by rail but the several villages are not well connected with road or rail, and these villages turn out to be isolating in rainy season.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is the India's most important National Parks because of density (60 at 450 km2) of Tigers, which is highest in the country. The neighboring Panpatha Sanctuary has also declared as a part of this Reserve. This Park named after the highest hill Bandhavgarh in the centre of it.

Tigers, Leopards, Jackal and Bears are the main attractions of this National park. The ideal time to Visit this park is in between the Mid-November to June. The park remains closed during the monsoon months from July to early November.

To reach this place private transports buses, taxis are available from nearest district headquarter Umaria (32 km) on Umaria - Manpur state highway.

Bandhavgarh is the name of tehsil in Umaria district, previously which was the capital of the Bandhavgarh Kingdom of the Magha family. Bandhavgarh fort is a place of extensive archaeological and historical importance. It is a natural impregnable fort and stands on a hill and this fort was open to all public on Krishna Janmastmi.

Bandhavgarh is also locally known by the name of Tala.

Pali / Birsinghpur

Pali or Birsinghpur is prominent for the Goddess Birasinidevi. Temple of Birasinidevi is close to Birsinghpur railway station. As per local popular faith Birasinidevi is Goddess Kali, represented here as skeleton Goddess, but with her mouth closed. The annual fairs are held on the occasion of Navaratri and Ramnavmi near the temple of Goddess.

Birsinghpur is named as it because in 19th century there was a king named Veer Singh. The town is named Birsinghpur after him. Birsinghpur is also known as Pali or Birsinghpur-Pali.

This city is surrounded by the district border of Shahdol, Dindori, Katni, and Satna.

How to Reach

Umaria is well connected with Katni-Bilaspur rail line and Umaria railway station is very close (approximately 400 m) to district headquarter as well city bus stand (approximately 800 m). It is also well connected with neighboring district headquarter Shahdol, Katni, and Satna by road as well as by rail. Dinddori is well connected by road. The nearest airport is Jabalpur.

Literacy

As the maximum percentage of population are from rural areas of this district and percentage of literacy is below the National average around 33 in totality however the rural areas literacy percentage is around 30.

This district has only 2 College one at district headquarter and another one at Birsinghpur. Apart from Education Department of Madhya Pradesh Tribal Welfare Department has also operating primary to higher secondary level schools in rural areas to promote the education.

Crops

The main source of living of residence of this district is agriculture by Kharif and Rabi season. Paddy, Maize, Kodon, Jowar are the main crop in Kharif and Wheat, Gram, Rape, Mustard in Rabi. The 20% portion of total available land for agriculture is suitable for double crop (Kharif and Rabi).

The average maximum temperature is 460C in May and June and average minimum 20C December and January.
