The significance of this day is that the sisters pray for the wellbeing of their brothers which is signified by the tying of the Raksha Sutra and the brothers in return of the prayers promise to protect their sisters from all the evil on the earth throughout their lifetime, till their last breadth. This promise is signified by giving their sisters a return gift.
Sisters after waking up in the morning take bath and offer prayers to God for their brothers. They keep fast till they meet and tie Rakhi to their brother. The procedure follows step by step. Firstly the sisters perform an aarti of their brothers, then they apply tilak on their forehead and then tie the Rakhi.
