Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav is also known as the Sawai Mahotsav or Sawai Gandharva Festival or Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav. Now the Sawai Mahotsav is known as the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav. This colorful musical festival in Pune city Maharashtra state of India is held every year in the month of December. The 59th Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav will be held from 7 December 2011- 11 December 2011 at Ramanbaug High School Grounds. Sawai Gandharva Festival is held in memory of Sawai Gandharva, a famous Hindustani vocalist who passed away on 12 September 1952. 1953 is the starting year of Sawai Mahotsav. The organizer of Sawai Gandharva Festival is the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal(ASPM). This is the first time that this organizer is holding this festival for 5 days.
During this colorful festival, musicians, dancers as well as vocalists from different places of India will arrive in Pune to pay homage to Sawai Gandharva. Another important fact is that Sawai Gandharva Musical Festival held in memory of Rambhau Kundgolkar popularly known as Sawai Gandharva, is one among the important musical festivals of India. Artists from all gharanas will be performing during this festival. All musicians will display their talents during this musical festival. In general we can say that the disciples of Sawai Gandharva, led by late bharat ratna pandit bhimsen joshi started this Sawai Gandharva Festival. This musical festival will be a tribute to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and also for vocalists Shrikant Deshpande and Madhav Gudi respectively.
