Borra caves were discovered in 1807 by William King George of Geological Survey of India. In these caves you can see stalactite and stalagmite formations. Stalagmites mean deposits seen at the bottom of the cave and grow upward while stalactites are considered as the calcium carbonate deposits that hang from the top of the cave. All science students are familiar with the fact that calcium carbonate is a compound represented by the formula CaCO3. It is believed that Borra Caves are one-million year old. For those who wish to visit the caves, remember that no accommodation is available close to these caves. Inside the caves, you will be able to see interesting structures, temple, mosque, church, mushroom formation, yellow colored sulfur deposits, calcium deposits etc. The interior of the caves is made colorful as well as spectacular by 63 lamps of sodium vapor, mercury and halogen lamps respectively. We all know the fact that ancient things seen in our country has historical facts or legends related to it. Likewise the Borra Caves of Andhra Pradesh have a legend associated to it. Suddenly it got dropped through a hole in the roof. Meanwhile the cowherd was searching for the cow. He came across the caves and found a stone inside the cave that resembled a lingam. The cowherd interpreted it as lord Shiva who protected the cow. 
This story was narrated by the tribal who inhabited the villages around the caves. They built a lord Shiva temple outside the caves and people used to visit this temple for worship and to get a glimpse of the lingam. I have already mentioned that Borra Caves is located in Andhra Pradesh state, India. So you can easily reach there by means of air, road or rail services.
•Araku Rail cum Road tour
This is a daily tour from Vizag to Araku via Borra Caves. The departure time will be 7:00 AM and the arrival is 9:00 PM on the same day. For adults, the fare will be Rs 300 and for child it is Rs 240. The fare is subjected to change.
•Araku-Tyda-Borra caves tour
This is a daily tour from Vizag to Araku, Borra Caves and Tyda forest. This does not include the rail journey. The departure time is 7:00 AM and the arrival time is 9:00 PM on the same day. For adults, the fare will be Rs 150 and for child it is Rs 120. It should be noted that the fare will be subjected to change.
