It is believed that a major portion of the collections present in this museum was acquired by Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung lll, who was the former prime minister of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad. Since Salar Jung lll was a bachelor, he depended upon his staff for taking care of the collections. 
The collections left behind in his ancestral palace, known as Diwan Deodi was exhibited there as a private museum. It should be noted that this museum was inaugurated in 1951 by Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the former prime minister of India. Later the museum was shifted to its present location at Afzalgunj and there is a belief that the present collection constitutes only half of the wealth collected by Salar Jung lll. The museum is administered by a board of trustees with the governor of Andhra Pradesh as the chairperson under the Salar Jung museum act of 1961.
