Rajasthan is known for its exquisite food and has some of the mouth watering desserts. Let us know in detail how to make one of the dessert viz. Moong dal halwa or Lentil pudding. Halwa is one of the famous and widely eaten desserts in India.
For making this dish you will need a grinder for the moong dal and a pan to make the halwa.

Ingredients for sugar syrup
  • Sugar- 1 ½ cup

  • Water- 1 cup

  • Ingredients for Moong dal halwa
  • Moong dal- 1 ½ cup

  • Milk- 1 ½ cup

  • Sugar- 1 cup

  • Ghee or unsalted butter- 6-7 table spoons

  • Cardamom- 5-6 pieces(crushed)

  • Saffron – ½ tablespoon

  • Procedure to make sugar syrup


  • Put water (1 cup) in a pan and turn on the gas.

  • Put on a medium flame and add the sugar(1 ½ cup)

  • Add the cardamom and saffron

  • Boil it for two to three minutes and turn off the gas.



  • Procedure to make Moong dal halwa


  • First of all you need to clean and soak the moong dal (lentils) in water for atleast 4 hours.

  • When the lentils are ready, make a fine paste using the blender or grinder.

  • When the lentil paste is quite fine then it is ready to be used for cooking.

  • Take the paste in a pan and add the ghee or butter.

  • Put on the gas and keep a medium flame.

  • Cook it for around 15 minutes. There will be a change in the texture and colour.

  • When it is golden brown add the sugar syrup in the pan.

  • Cook it for another 2-5 minutes constantly checking the look.

  • Your Moong dal halwa is ready to be served now. You can add dry fruits like cashew, almond etc. for seasoning. It tastes best when served warm.
