Modem types and some acronyms

Hard Modem:
A Modem that has both a data pump and processing chip and its board .These are becoming rare and are mostly ISA type.

Soft Modem:
A Modem that has a data pump but no processor on its board.Also known as winmodems they only work within windows environment and will not work in DOS or Linux.

Internal Modem:
A Modem that goes inside the box.Most Internal Modem are PCI slot type.The Internal Modem is like any other expansion card which is plugged onto motherboard expansion slot.

These audio signals are transmitted thru RJ11 jack used for telephone lines.
