Tulip Joshi was born and brought up in Mumbai. Joshi had her college education from the Mithibai College, Mumbai, and acquired a graduation degree in Food and Chemistry. Tulip Joshi was a contestant in Femina Miss India 2000 a beauty contest. Though she did not make to the top final list, but it is this beauty contest paved way for Tulip Joshi modelling career as her beauty and charming looks were noticed by famous media personalities. Luck favoured the popular Mumbai model Tulip Joshi as she could not believe herself and it's quite merely a chance that she got into the film industry through a wedding reception. She attended the wedding reception of Aditya Chopra, the son of director Yash Chopra, where she was noticed and she was invited to appear for an auditon for the film 'Mere Yaaar Ki Shaadi Hai' (2002) which was her bollywood debut film which was a remake of the Hollywood movie 'My Best Friend's Wedding', where she casted along with Uday Chopra, Jimmy Shergil and Bipasha Basu which was directed by Sanjay Gandhi and produced by Yash Chopra. This gave her a good start in bollywood movies but as she was not that much fluent in hindi, she was trained for that while acting in Feroz Khan's Studio, where she was re-named as Sanjana in order to suit Indian audiences. Then she appeared in the movie 'Dil Maange More' (2002). After this film she took a break from film industry for two years as she has got severe back problems due to slipped disc.
She made her appearance after two years into the film industry where she got an offer to act in Manish Jha's film 'Matrubhoomi'(2005) a film which depicts the ill effects of female foeticide and this film got her good appreciation and recognition in the industry.
