Three years ago, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had instructed all universities in India to implement a credit and semester system. The University of Mumbai is introducing it for the very first time in this academic year, beginning from July 2011. Features of the new Credit and Semester System in University of Mumbai Colleges
1. The new system involves division of each academic year into 2 semesters.
2. Every student will be evaluated on the basis of their performance in 6 semesters.
3. A student will earn credits through: attendance, submission of projects, appearing for tests and participating in classroom interactions. All these credits will then be added up to the student's final year total.
4. The credit and semester system is applicable to every single undergraduate degree program offered in all colleges which are affiliated to the University of Mumbai, including arts, science and commerce colleges.
5. The system is not choice based in the way it is offered in foreign universities. That is, a student cannot choose a subject as per his/her interest or aptitude.
6. A student cannot transfer any credits from one program to another even if it is at the same level or across programs within the same University.
7. Evaluations of the new credit and semester system in Mumbai collegesworks as follows:
Every student will be evaluated in 2 parts:
(i) Internal assessment of 40%: This has a breakup of:
(a) 20 marks: 2 periodical class tests in each subject, conducted during the semester
(b) 10 marks: A project or presentation or assignment specific to a subject
(c) 5 marks: Participating actively in the classroom
(d) 5 marks: Overall conduct of the student is assessed
(ii) Exam of 60% at the end of the semester: This exam will be as follows:
(a) 2 hours duration
(b) 4 questions, each question of 15 marks
Aggregate required: You must get minimum 40% marks in aggregate for each course.
(i) Passing marks in internal assessment: 16 out of 40
(ii) Passing marks in semester-end exam: 24 out of 60
(iii) Minimum grade required: E grade
