Location of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary


Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Morigaon district of Assam (on the border of Nagaon and Kamrup district) at a distance of about 50-60 kms. east of Guwahati and about 17 kms. from National Highway 37 from Chamata.

About Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary


To speak about the history of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, the legend is that Princess Pabitara was the daughter of King of Mayong, who was died in her youth. So the king gave the name 'Pabitara' to this forest after the name of his beloved daughter. On 16 July 1971, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary was declares as a reserve forest and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1981.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 38.80 sq.km. providing an ideal habitat to rare and endangered species of birds and animals esp. one horned rhinoceros, wild buffaloes and wild pigs. Other animals preserved in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary includes Asiatic Buffalo, Leopard, Civet Cat, Wild Bear, etc.; various species of reptiles and above 200 species of migratory birds. The density of rare and endangered One-horned Rhinoceros is five rhinos in one sq. km. area of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.
