About Bongaigaon District in Assam
Bongaigaon District is one of the administrative district of Assam. The headquarters of this district is situated at Bongaigaon. Bongaigaon district covers an area of 2510 sq. km. This district is located at a longitude of 89 degrees east to 90 degrees 96 minutes east and latitude of 26 degrees 28 minutes north to 26 degrees 54 minutes north. Boundry for Bongaigaon district is consists of Barpeta District on the east, by Brahmaputra River on the south and by Kokrajhar on north and west corner. Bagheswari Temple is situated in the middle of Bongaigaon town at its top portion. Tourist can observe an afforested hillock with a garden and a small artificial lake fed by a perennial stream in this region. The Bagheswari Hill is the homeland for ancient Lord Shiva temple inside a stone cave. Another two beautiful temples present here are mainly temple of Bagheswari and Baba Tarak Nath. Every year a huge number of pilgrims comes to Bagheswari hill top. For the developement of this beautiful site into a accessible tourism and recreational place, various developmental steps were taken up and programmed in between 2001-2003.
Kakaijana is the superb Wildlife Sanctuary which covers a huge region of the district. This is also a Reserved Forest that is placed about 15 km away from Bongaigaon city towards eastern. Tourist can also be able to see the Golden Langur which is found rare in the world and is found only in the North Eastern region of this district. Among these Golden Langur various types of birds and different types of important shrubs and herbs are also placed here. Kalikapat is one hill spring which runs through the forest and drains to the paddy field nearby the region. Due to these superb scenario this place has a great importance in the tourism sector.
One of the most interesting thing that the tourist can observe the five rock-cut caves situated at Jogighopa on the bank of the Brahmaputra River. These are the unique examples of rock-cut architecture in Assam remains observed in Bongaigaon District. This Cave measures about 2.60 metre breadths, 1.8 metre in depth and 1.90 metre in height. It also consists of a roughly sorrounded ceiling. This place is too busy with a lot of visitors throughout the year.
Lalmati-Duramari Ganesh Temple is one of the best historical attraction in this district. This temple is situated near Abhayapuri town under North Salmara sub-division. It is refered as the oldest temples of Assam. The three main views shows the reason for destructions of the Lalmati-Duramari Ganesh Temple like the first view shows that earthquakes destroyed the temple and its images, while the second view shows the Kalapahar who revolted against worshipers and priests, also destroyed the temple along with other temples and images in the North-East and the last view states that Burmese invaders who camped at Malegarh hills destroyed the temple along with the idols. But it is clear that earthquake has been the basic reason of the destruction of the temple.
Bongaigaon District of Assam also has perfect educational system with many schools and colleges here. Generally the people here are mainly involved in agricultural and other small scale cottage industries.
