About the Mahabhairav Temple of Assam
The famous ancient temple of Mahabhairab situated at the top of a hillock on the northern side of Tezpur town is a gigantic landmark and provides a magnetic prestige and beauty to this beautiful town. It is believed that the temple have been established by king Bana in the pre-historical times.
From the establishment the main Shiva temple was originally built of stone but after heavily damaged by the catastrophic earthquake of 1897 the new one was reconstructed and built with concrete. Kings of Ahom rule donated huge area of Devottar land to the Temple and priests and Paiks were appointed to look after the temple. The complete responsibility of Temple management was in the hands of a Borthakur.
The religious history of this temple, which is visited by many devotees from all over India, can be shown back to the age of the Puranas. Banasura, the demon king first introduced the linga worship, who had his capital at Tezpur . The most interesting thing to observe that perhaps the largest stone-phallus (Shiva Linga) in the entire world inside the temple of Mahabhairab which is said to have been established by Banasura.
