This district has been mostly dominated by KochRajbongshi Community which is a part of "Bijni Kingdom" ruled by Rajbongshi Kings. The entire area of the district has been ruled by Kings / Zamindars / Feudal Lords all these time. Bongaigaon District in Assam has two parts - Old Bongaigaon and New Bongaigaon. It was basically the political and administrative demands which forced the requirement of forming this new district. However, the people of Bongaigaon and the neighbouring areas were demanding a new Sub-Division with its headquarters to be located at Bongaigaon.
