Historical information of Bongaigaon district

Bongaigaon district is the state of Assam in northeastern India. Historically district of Bongaigaon was created in 1989 from parts of the erstwhile Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts. The district headquarters are located at Bongaigaon, which is surrounded by Barpeta in the east, the Brahmaputra in the south and Kokrajhar in the north and west corner and occupies an area of 2,510 km². The name of Bongaigaon town and district is the elongation of a fig and old village named Bongaigaon also known as Bong-ai-gaon located on the southern border of the town. This Bongaigaon village area was famous for orange fruits which were sold along with other agricultural products in the nearest market named Birjhora Bazar located at the heart of Bongaigaon town. This district has been mostly dominated by KochRajbongshi Community which is a part of "Bijni Kingdom" ruled by Rajbongshi Kings. So, to accede to the wishes of the Bodos of Assam, Chirang a new district has come into place recently by dividing this Bongaigaon district. The entire area of the district has been ruled by Kings / Zamindars / Feudal Lords all these time. Bongaigaon District in Assam has two parts - Old Bongaigaon and New Bongaigaon. It was basically the political and administrative demands which forced the requirement of forming this new district. However, the people of Bongaigaon and the neighbouring areas were demanding a new Sub-Division with its headquarters to be located at Bongaigaon. Newly created district head quarters of Assam had Sub-divisional infrastructures of their own.
