About Kamrup District of Assam


Kamrup district is situated at the western part of Assam. It is an administrative district of the state. The District is bounded by Udalguri and Baska district in the north, Meghalaya in the south, Darrang and Kamrup Metropolitan District in the east and Goalpara and Nalbari District in the west.It covers an area of 4,34 ,500 ha which includes forest area of 1,16,694 ha, fallow land of 7,110 haand net cultivated area of 1,81,608 ha.There are 15 tea gardens in the district with an area of 3,660 ha. The main rivers flows through this district are Brahmaputra, Puthimari, Bornoi, Nona, Kulsi, Pagladiya and Kalajal.The district is known after the ancient name of Assam that is Kamarupa. The district consists of a wide plains of River Brahmaputra that flows from the east to west. The place is known for its distinctive Kamrupi culture and tradition. The people of the place speaks a unique language called Kamrupi.

Economy of the Kamrup District of Assam


The district's economy is mainly agrarian in nature. Most of the people are engaged in agriculture. Rice is the main agricultural product of the places. However, some other crops are also grown here. The district consists of mostly rural population as there is only one major city in the district that is Guwahati city.

Famous Places in Kamrup District of Assam


Kamrup district is famous as a tourist destination in India, the most famous Kamakhya temple is situated in this district. Some important visiting places of this district are
Kamakhya temple:
It is situated at Nilachal hill in the west of Guwahati city. It is a Shakti peeth temple and an important pilgrimage destination for Hindu. Ambubashi festival is celebrated in this temple every year during the month of July.

Hayagriva Madhava Temple:
It is situated in Hajo of Kamrup district and is about 40 km away from the main city Guwahati. The temple was constructed by the King Raghu deva Narayan in 1583. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva who is called here Hayagriva Madhav. There is a big pond known as Madhab Pukhuri near the temple.The main festival of the temple is Maha Shivaratri.

Poa Macca in Hajo:
It is a place of pilgrimage for the Muslims and located near Hayagriva Madhava temple in Hajo. It is the tomb of seer Giasuddin Auliya. This Poa Macca is similar to Macca. Every year thousands of visitors come to this place.

Aswaklanta :
This temple was constructed by king Siva Singha in 1720 A.D and is situated on the bank of the river Brahmaputra. There are two big temples in this place. It is believed that when Lord Krishna came to kill Narakasura his horse got tired and took rest hence the place is named as Aswaklanta.There are two images Janardana and Anantasai Vishnu in the temple.

Chandubi:
It is a natural water lagoon which is situated at 64 km away from Guwahati city. It is a famous picnic spot in Kamrup district. Fishing and rowing in the lake are added attraction of the place.

Daul Govinda temple:
This temple is located at the north bank of Brahmaputra River. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Doul Utsav or Holi is the main festival celebrated in this temple.

Sualkuchi:
It is the silk village of Assam. The place is famous for handmade silk cloths. It is situated at 45 km away from Guwahati city. Various types of silk cloths like Pat, Muga and Ari are produced in this place.
