Barpeta District is a sub division of old Kamrup district that was declared as an independent district in 1983. The District has two- Civil Sub-Divisions, Barpeta and Bajali. The land area of the district varies from highland to low lying areas, as in some places there are plain land and on the other side there are small hillocks namely Baghbar, Fulora and Chatala that provides magnificent view of Brahmaputra river. This District covers an area of 3245 square km and is surrounded by international border of Bhutan in the North side, Nalbari District in the East side , Kamrup and Goalpara District in the South and Bongaigaon District in the West side of it. The climate of Barpeta remains mild and pleasant through out the year. The place enjoys two distinct seasons of summer and winter. The main river of Assam that is Brahmaputra River flows in the southern part of the district. The tributaries of Brahmaputra that flows in this district are Beki, Manah, Pohumara, Kaldia, Palla, Nakhanda, Marachaulkhowa and Bhelengi. The district is well known as the ''Land of Satras". The Barpeta Satra is a famous satra in the state and thousands of devotees come to this satra every year. There are many other satras scattred around the district.

Barpeta district has a unique culture which makes the place very important in the map of Assam. The great Assamese renaissance Shrimanta Sankardev founded a unique assamese culture in and around the district. After that his followers Madhabdev, Haridev, Damodardev and their devotees followed his path and did great job. They founded many satras which are considered as regio-cultural institutions or monasteries that changed socio economic status of the region. Patbaushi Satra: This satra was established by Shrimanta Sankardeva. From this satra, Srimanta Sankardeva spread his faith, literature, music, art and culture to its fullest form. In this place he spent 18 years of his life and wrote 'Kirtan Ghosa' and Borgeets.
Ganakkuchi Satra: It was founded by Sri Madhab Deva, one of the disciples of Shrimanta Sankardeva. Here one can see some well preserved items used by the guru and Sachipat puthis.
Jania Satra: It was established by Shri Narayan Das Thakur Ata one of the disciples of Sankardeva.He wrote many devotional songs here. . It is located at 8 km from Barpeta town.
Sundaridiya Satra: This Satra was established by Shri Madhab Deva. In this satra Sri Madhab Deva created Paal Nam and Beer Nam or Thiya Nam.
Barpeta Satra: It was founded Sri Madhab Deva who stayed here and spent 8 years of his life. In this satra he appointed Sri Mathura Das Burha Ata as the first Satradhikar.
Satra Kanara: It was established by Sri Sri Narayan Das Thakur Ata. This satra is located at 16 km away from Barpeta town.
Pari Hareswar Devalaya, Dubi: This is a Shiva Temple located at Dubi near Pathsala of Bajali sub division. The temple was formed by the then Ahom King Shiva Singha who also donated an image of Goddess Durga to the temple.
Gorokhia Gosair Than: This than was founded by Shri Narayan Das Thakur Ata, a disciple of Shrimanta Sankardeva. It covers an area of 25 Bighas of land. Doul festival is the main festival celebrated in this temple.
Manas National Park : The famous Manas National Park is located in Barpeta district. It is 20 km away from Barpeta towm.It covers an area of 2837 square kilometer.It is also a UNSECO world heritage site. Cultural Art Forms in the district
Borgeet: These are the devotional songs composed by Shrimanta Sankardeva which are very popular in the state.
Ankia Geet: Ankiyageet for ankiya-nats or plays were composed by Shrimanta Sankardeva. These are sung on some special festivals.
Holi Geet: These are chorus songs that originated in Barpeta satra and spread throughout the state. These are famous song for Holi festival.
Loka Geet: It is popular folk music of Assam that expresses the thoughts and emotions of the common people.
Traditional Crafts of Barpeta district
Handicraft: It includes furnitures,gift items, decoration items that are prepared by the rural people of the region. They use cane and bamboo for these products.
Bell and Brass Metal Industry : The town of Sarthebari is well-known for the household bell and brass-metal industry in Assam. These products have great demand in the international market. Some of the popular products are Bota, Bowl, Kolha etc.
Pottery : There is one community called Hira community who made these Pottery items.This Hira community is a unique feature of the region.
Mask: These masks are prepared with materials like terracotta,pith,metal,bamboo and wood which are used in Bhaonas or plays that was introduced by Shrimanta Sankardeva.
Traditional Jewellary : Barpeta is famous centre of Traditional Assamese jewellary that are made up of Gold. These traditional jewellaries are used in Bihu Dances.
