Morigaon district of Assam

Morigaon district is an administrative district of the state of Assam in North East India. It is the second smallest district that spreads over an area of 1450.02 Sq. Km. It is situated in Brahmaputra valley and surrounded by kamrup district on the west, River Brahmaputra on the north, Nagaon District on the east and Karbi Anglong district on the west side. It is an alluvial plain land with many rivers and marshes. The main rivers that flows through the district are Killing, Kollong and Kapili. The place provides a picturesque view of Himalayas especially during winter season.
Economy of the district
Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Morigaon district. The major crops of this place are vegetable, paddy, jute, wheat, and mustard. Almost, all the people of this place are expert in Handloom weaving which reflects the culture and tradition of the district. To support this handloom industry in the district the Assam Government has introduced many schemes and projects like Deen Dayal Hatkargha Protsohan Yojana, Handloom Development Centre, Integrated Handloom Village Development project.Places to visit in Morigoan
The important tourist places of the district are Patekibori Than, pabitora Wildlife Sanctury, Sitajakhal, Deosal Siva Temple, Kachasila Hill, Asia's Largest Dry Fish Market.
Pabitora Wildlife Sanctury : This forest was declared as Reserved Forest on 18.11.1971 and a wildlife sanctuary on 16.7.1987. It is famous for one horned Rhinos. The sanctuary covers an area of 38.83 Hectars.
Kachasila : It is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva and Parvoti. There is also a large number of statues of Lord Ganesh in the temple. It is few situated on the top of Kachasila Hills and is only few kilometers away from Pobitara.
Deosal : It is a big ancient temple of Lord Shiva situated about 4 kms. away from Jagiroad town. It is believed that it was an Ashram of Valmiki where Sita Devi lived. Every year hiva Ratri Mela is observed here.
Sitajakhala : It is the steps that were made by cutting the stones from the temple to the River Killing at the Sita Jakhala Hills.It is believed that Valmiki cut those stones as steps for Sita to go to the river from the temple. Thus these steps are called Sitajakhala.
Sivakunda :This is a water fall in the Amsoi hills which is located about 10 k.ms away from National Highway 37 towards south of the district. It is a very popular picnic spot and thousands of visitors come to this place during the months of January and February.
Joon Beel Mela :It is a traditional mela of trade where people of the hills and plains exchange their goods. Every year during Magh month this Mela is held, representing the mutual under standing between the people hills and plains.
Dry Fish Market: It is Asia's largest dry fish market situated at Jagiroad in Morigaon District. These dry fish comes from Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar. It is mainly supplied to the hill states like Nagaland, Manipur , Mizoram, Meghalaya and Arunachal . Some amount of dry fish is also supplied to South Asian Countries, Singapore and Malaysia.
