Zoological Gardens at Mysore or Mysore Zoo is one best and well maintained zoo in the world, it has housed around 1500 varieties of animals with several varieties of rare species of birds.
Zoological Gardens at Mysore – The start up
Chamarajendra Zoological Garden, but it is well known as Mysore Zoo which was started in the year 1892 by the then erstwhile ruler of Mysore, in the initial stages it was maintained in private capacity as it was named ‘Khas Bangale' and few have called them as ‘Thamaha Bangle' in those days it was a small zoo which covered not much area, but it has covered around 250 acres, in the early years it was visited by royal family only and in the year 1920 it was opened for public. As it is located in the city unlike other zoos in India and it has been named as one of the well maintained and also one of the best in the world.
This Mysore Zoo housed around 1500 animals which starts from Opossum to Orangutan and also it has other wide range of different animals, this zoo was the first of its kind which had Gorilla and Penguins. A lot of animals were imported from other countries like Africa, Australia and America under the conservation project and this zoo is famous for successfully breeding the white tiger.
This zoo contains a small museum many stuffed animals can be seen here and it also a small library, this zoo is also famous for conducting extra curricular activities like painting etc for locals, the very basic aim for such activities is to create awareness about the cruelty to animals and also having knowledge in preserving rare kind of animals.
The zoo boasts of various species of herbivorous and carnivorous animals and lays a lot of emphasis on the health care of the animals.
At present this zoo has a scheme of allowing adopting of animals which was stated in the year 1980 by Ms. Sally Walker of USA as Friends of Mysore Zoo, this scheme helps to take much care about the rare animals as the persons who adopt few animals will bear the maintenance expenditures of those animals which they adopt.
There is another lake which is called as ‘Karanji Lake' which adjacent to this zoo, this lake has housed several rare kind of birds, and to attract the people this lake has the facility of boating also.
This zoo has an in-house veterinary hospital. laboratory, nursing yard and staff, pharmacy and fully equipped operation theater, many research activities are also going on here.Ideal time to visit Zoological Gardens at Mysore
The ideal time to get maximum benefit by visiting this zoo is at 12 clock or else at evening 4 p.m. as most of the animals withdraw to their enclosures for feeding otherwise one may miss many animals.Zoological Gardens at Mysore visiting hours and entrance fee
