All along with the start of Maruthi's car of the common man, Maruti Suzuki India Limited was holding its sway in the Indian car market till about 15 years back. The Maruti Suzuki India Limited with its introduction of the concept of truly low priced car, Maruti 800, at its inception in February 1981 broke the monopoly and stranglehold of the 'Premier' and 'Hindustan' on the Indian car market. People had to pay premium and wait for a long time for a car. The Hyundai was an unknown brand. Before their entry into the Indian market, the Ford, Opal, Honda and the Daewoo were already in the Indian market along with the PAL, HM, Tata and MM. Then Maruti saw a real tough competitor in the market, the Hyundai. 15 years back the Hyundai opened its innings in India and from then onwards there was no looking back for them. It was a story of steady climb in the car market segment giving tough time to the Maruti. Now they are the number two Auto Company after Maruti in India. The Eon's nearest comparable model is the Alto. But in keeping with the tradition of the Hyundai we can expect feature wise, much more than the current best seller in this segment of the market. In fact when it enters the market we can expect that the comparable model for Eon will be Eon only. It is an economical entry level car with big features. It is spacious enough internally, has a spacious boot like that is found in the bigger models but compact enough exteriorly. For an engine of 814 cc Eon assures 21.1 km per liter of fuel. It is marginally taller and wider of its nearest comparable model by 4 and 7.5 c m respectively. And in style it is the king in that class. Its style is like its big brother 'Verna'. Verna gave a tough challenge to its rivals like the V V Vento and the Honda City etc. Similarly the Eon Will be a tough challenge in style and features to its nearest comparable. The price will be lower than its sibling i10, and the Alto. It is a young car for the young individual and young Indian family. It is an Indian car for the Indian middle class. The final product is the result of intense interactions with the R & D institutions, Auto Journalists, other designers etc which is clearly visible in the product. For the arrival of this new economical car people are waiting excitedly as the frenzy we experienced when the Tata Nano was expected on the roads. This excitement is understandable as for quite some time there was no new and different model in the small budget car segment. Of course it cannot be compared with the Nano which is an out and out low cost car like the low cost flight without any fringe introduced by the Deccan Airways. Anyway Eon is a stylish compact one but spacious internally. Eon will give choice unlike the Nano in its class. It will be tough for the Alto, Chevy Spark and possibly for its own elder brother Hyundai Santro Xing.

With its special Hyundai style of body, bonnet and the headlamps the Eon looks like a cheery and practical car for the Indian roads. Even with the ultra new style, it has retained the pleasing features of the i10 and maintained the stamp of elegance of the Hyundai cars. The design of the wheels place the leg space is increased inside which is well ventilated. As the doors open almost at right angles with respect to the body getting in and out is very comfortable. It is a car in the category of 800 cc 50 bhp three cylinder petrol engine which will serve superbly the needs of the Indian small family. It has adopted some parts of the Santro to save cost. It can be expected to stay in the market for quite some time giving tough time for other comparables.
