Shree Panchalingeshwara temple is one of the ancient and largest temple in Dakshina Kannada District. This temple is at the heart of Vittla city & currently managed by a committee which is headed by Dr.D.Veerendra Hegde Dharmadikari, Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala
Overview of Shree Panchalingeshwara Temple:
"Pancha" means five. As the name suggests, there are five linga's in this temple. Those five linga's are : Vamadeva, Thatpurusha, Aghora, Sadyojatha and Ishana. Historians says that this temple was created by Pandavas. People believe that the five Shiva Lingas were set apart by the Pandavas.
Architecture of Shree Panchalingeshwara Temple:
Sree Panchalingeshwara temple is having a special architecture known as "Gaja Prusta" i.e. back of an elephant. Other temples built in this architecture are Madhur & Adur in Kerala.
History :
The chief diety of Domba Heggade dynasty was Sree Panchalingeshwara. This temple was under Domba Heggade Dynasty. As per famous historian Dr. P. Gururaj Bhat, this temple might have been constructed 7-8 A.D. As per the available evidences, this temple was renovated in 1436, 1744 and 1894 .
Currently renovation work is going on. Rennovation work started in 2007.
