Where is this place seen in Karnataka ?



Srirangapatna is in the Mandya district of Karnataka. It is also near to the Mysore district as it is barely located at a distance of 19 Km from the Mysore district in Karnataka. This is one the place that comes under Bangalore-Mysore highway and basically has high amounts of historical importance! This will be the must see tourist spot in this particular region near Mysore district.The entire Srirangapatna town is fully closed by the river Kaveri of Karnataka to form a an island where River Kaveri is seen. The main part of River Kaveri of Karnataka flows on the eastern side of the island. Also there is a part of River Kaveri that is called as Paschima Vaahini flows in the west direction of the Srirangapatna island! The shape of the island seems to be like an egg also sometimes.

Why is it called Srirangapatna ?



The place Srirangapatna in Karnataka is also called due to the presence of Lord Ranganathaswamy temple in this particular region.This Ranganatha swamy temple in Srirangapatna dominates the entire Srirangapatna town that is the reason that Srirangapattana town is one of the most important Vaishnava centers and vaishnava people attraction in Southern part of India.


History of Srirangapatna:



Srirangapatna town is one of the main centers of historical importance in Karnataka. The Srirangapatna town in Karnataka was found by the rulers of the Ganga dynasty in the 9th century. Till now Srirangapatna has not lost it luster. The Srirangapatna town became more famous during the rule of the Vijayanagara Dynasty. In this period the Srirangapatna town got lot of importance and lot more things were done to this place in this particular era! However the fall of Vijayanagar empire did not make any difference to the development of the Srirangapatna town,since wodeyar dynasty took care of it! Later the rule of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan built many forts,places that possess high historical importance till today!

Srirangapatna fort, also called as Tipu's palace is one of the most famous historical places of Karnataka and also India. This place has architecture that mainly comprises of Indo-Islamic style. There are huge Persian inscriptions on the entrance gate surfaces that gives us the details of the fort.The main part of the Srirangapatna fort or Tipu's place is 'Lal Mahal' which was the place where the then king of mysore city i.e. Tipu Sultan used to reside. The fort was built in such way that it has a double wall defense system and also has four big and wide entrances, namely – Delhi, Bangalore, Mysore & Water and Elephant gates. The two dungeons located at the lower chambers of the fort are very beautiful,glorious that provide grat historical importance to the Srirangapatna fort. These dungeons were predominantly used to detain the British soldiers who were arrested. Srirangapatna Fort or Tipu Sultan palace also houses a mosque and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna, that is famous for its gopuram and thick fort-like walls which is very rare to see.There are many paintings that show the tremendous victory of Tipu Sultan over British Empire, are also present on the walls. The Chaturvimsati pillars that bore carvings of 24 forms of Vishnu, at the inner entrance of the fort are very famous that are really beautiful to see. The tomb of Tipu Sultan can also be found in the vicinity of the fort. near the fort, is the river Kaveri which has amazing scenic beauty!

Ranganatha Swamy Temple:

The Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Shrirangapatna enshrines Lord Visshnu as Ranganata.The deity of Shrirangapatana is Shri Ranganathaswwamy. Within the vicinity of the temple is the presence of the great Lord Ranganataswamy on the back of a snake. The architecture is a mixture of the two different architectural style that are Hoysalas and Vijayanagara styles. The temple has fort like walls and an intricately carved Gopura in Vijayanagar style of architecture. The idol of Lord Ranganatha is in reclining posture on the bed laid out by the serpent Aadi Sesha is about 4.5 meters in length.

The temple is also very well known for its Lakhadweepotsava when one lakh lamps are lit during Sakranthi.


Puja timings : From 8 to 9.30 am and 7 to 8 pm but the temple is open for devotees all through the year

The Colonel Bailey Dungeon:

This is one of the famous dungeon that is present in the North direction of ShriRanganata Swamy temple in Sringapatana. The Colonel Bailey dungeon is of 30.5 meters in breadth and 12.2 meters in length.The Colonel Bailey Dungeon is mainly built up of bricks and mortar material. The prisoners were chained in the king's period to the stone slabs fixed on the East, North and West walls of the dungeon.This particular dungeon is named after the person called Colonel Bailey who died in this place in the year 1780. During the siege of Srirangapatna, one of the cannons rolled back, pierced the ceiling and fell into the dungeon. One can see them still lying there.
This famous dungeon is located at a distance of 1 km. from the famous Ranganata Swamy Temple!

Jama Masjid:

The famous Jamma Masjid is a typical mosque that is present near the Bangalore Gate part of the fort. The former king of Srirangapatana Tipu Sultan built the Jamma Masjid in the year 1787AD after the Tipu Sultan achieved the throne of Mysore state! The Jama Masjid is a grand structure and a visual treat that has two lofty minarets! Also there are five beautiful Persian inscriptions, out of which one of this inscription mentions all the ninety-nine names of Allah.

Nimishamba Temple:



Shri Nimishamba Devi Temple


Nimishamba temple was built during the reign time of the great Mysore king and vodeyar Mummadi Krishnaraja Vodeyar about 300 to 400 years ago on the banks of the river Kauveri of Karnataka. Shri Nimishamba Devi is mainly considered as the incarnation of Goddess Parvathi Devi, who is one of the wife of Lord Shiva or Pashupathi. Also,the Nimishamba temple has the auspicious sign of Devi which is callede Shrichakra carved on a stone in front of Shri Nimishamba Devi and the pooja with mantras is performed.The Nimishamba Devi is so called since there is a a great belief among the devotees that Shri Nimishamba Devi is going to solve and remove all the their problems and troubles of her disciples within a minute(Nimisha in Kannada language).

How to Reach the Nimishamba temple ?
It takes around 2 km. from Shrirangapatna town. Governmernt and private buses frequently is quite high! Auto-rickshaws or tonga facilities are also available that can be hired from the Shrirangapatna.

Gumbaz:

The Gumbaz is situated towards the ending part of the Srirangapatana town. The then king Tippu Sultan built this magnificent and tremendous structure during the period 1782 AD to 1784 AD.The Gumbaz is no doubt truly an attractive square structural member that is mainly surrounded by a dome ,corridor that is purely supported by pillars of black hornblende. The Gumbaz of Shrirangapatana has a large ,beautifuly shaped dome, and also magnificently carved ebony doors inlaid with ivory.Tippu's tiger stripes impressions cover the walls of the Gumbaz.

it is located at a distance of 3 km. from the Shrirangapatana. Government,private,tongas and auto richshaws can be hired.
