Want to know how digital signatures work? Continue reading to get an in-depth idea on how the digital signatures work and why it is so important

The terrain where most communications happen in the world today is no more the physical world where once we used to communicate using physical letters and mails. Back then, documents were sent in thick bulky files with flags all around. Each document was supposed to be signed by ink. But thanks to the wonders of technology, our dependence on physical delivery of files and documents has reduced much more. Today, most communication, be it casual or official is happening through online modes, especially e-mails.

When e-mail communication had started, the one big debate that went on around the world was about the legality of these communications and whether the online communication that we do and the things that we communicate will constitute sufficient evidence in the court of law? Also, what about the security of the communication? How do we know if the person that the email mentions has actually sent the email? And what if there was tampering with the email midway in transit or after it was delivered, and so on? In order to tackle all this, digital signatures were brought into the picture.

Digital Signatures, to be honest, are the exact replica of physical ink signatures and even better. So what are digital signatures and how do they work? Digital signatures are subset of electronic signatures and are like electronic fingerprints. They are used to authenticate the signer with the document and is widely accepted as evidence, even in the eyes of Indian law with reference to the Information Technology Act, 2000. Based on public key cryptography, digital signatures are digital equivalent of a handwritten signature or a seal mark of a company or an individual as such but offers even more security than a normal signature would do. For instance, if a change to the contents of the file or letter to agree or authenticate which the signer had provided his signature in ink, is made after the person had signed such a document, the signature won't become invalid to an ordinary recipient who cannot judge any difference between the ink that the original signer had used to sign the document and that used by the person who chose to tamper the document midway. Also, we all know there are very many capable people in the world who can simply replicate the physical ink-signatures of people without leaving an iota of difference between the original and the replica. All these security issues make communication and authentication of documents very difficult.

The way digital signatures work:

It works on a public key-private key system. So when a person signs a document digitally, the private key is used to create the signature. The private key is with the signer. There's an algorithm which is used to create a hash for the data (the content which is being signed). You can imagine this as a digitized version of the content itself. This is further encrypted by the private key of the signer. The encrypted hash along with the hashing algorithm, inter alia, makes for the digital signature. When the document is received by the recipient or verifier, he must be able to validate the encrypted hash with the public key. Noteworthy is the fact that the value of the hash is unique with respect to the data it represents such that any change in the contents of the document itself will result in a change in the value of the hash. This is why digital signatures are widely accepted as evidence to prove that the data transmitted at the origin is, in fact, the data received at the end of the recipient.

Today, digital signatures are being used across a wide variety of documents. Apart from emails and other sent across emails, digital signatures are also regularly used by directors or authorized representatives of companies to file various forms, say with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, India. For filing forms on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs website, you'll require at least a Class 2 digital signature. However, most people who are responsible for filing, usually put to use a class 3 signature which is the highest class among the digital signatures.
