The city of Sangli in Maharashtra State is well known from past two centuries just because of Indoor game – Chess. Some people say that when the Chess tournaments are organized the city seems like "Wimbledon of Chess". His Majesty, Shri. Chhatrapati Rajarshi Shahu Maharaja of Kolhapur was one of the best players of Chess and he used to participate in the competitions which were held at Sangli. The best thing about Chess as a game was that anyone could easily participate and at times there were matches between rich and poor people as well. 
The game of chess was forbidden for children's during the start of 19th century due to misconception that it teaches them the aggression. Few people also thought that it increases anxiety level of child and disturb them mentally. The only reason behind visits of Indian Chess players in Sangli was Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar. Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar full name is Shri. Narhar Vyankatesh Padsalgikar and he dedicated more than 75 years to the game of Chess. Shri Bhaurao started playing chess since he was 6 years old and his father and grandfather played a great role in organizing the chess events in Sangli City of Maharashtra State in India.
Shri. Bhaurao played chess at ease and defeated much of the best chess players. At times Bhaurao was not able to get into first positions but his game was remarkable. In this way Bhaurao represented a total of 8 National Matches. It was amazing to know that Shri Bhaurao had won the first place Winner Title for about 8 times. In this way Chess in Sangli was known all over India just because of Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar who not only played the game but he also organized chess events. The remarkable think is that he dedicated his life to Chess and contributed towards the game for over 75 years. In this long journey, Shri Bhaurao also guided and offered training to the young players like Swati Ghate, Ashwini Pachapurkar and Bhagyashree Sathe alias Bhagyashree Thipsay. Few years back Viswanathan Anand also visited Sangli and Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar.
Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar was the only player who was awarded the prestigious Shivchatrapati Award, Dadoji Kondadev Award and Jeevagourava Puraskar by the Government of Maharashtra. Sameer Kathmale and Chess
The amazing thing about Sameer is that he also started playing chess at the age of 6 years like Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar. Today he has an experience of playing chess for about 13 years and it is obvious that he has earned many awards and trophies as well. In recently conducted Commonwealth Chess Championship, he has earned first norms position International Master (IM) Event. So it is clear that in this year, Sameer Kathmale is on the verge of being a first International Master of Chess from Western Region of Maharashtra State. Hence, in a time span of two year's, Sameer will be focusing on being a Grand Master (GM) of Chess.
Sameer Kathmale is so lucky that he got the training from Late Shri. Bhaurao Padsalgikar. Interestingly, he was only 6 years old and Shri Bhaurao Padsalgikar was very glad to teach him how to play chess. At the age of 19 years, Sameer Kathmale is a leading player in the Southern Region of Maharashtra which includes cities like Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Solapur, Sindhudurg and Ratanagiri. 
Inspiration of Sameer Kathmale and Preparation
Inspired by the game tactics of Viswanathan Anand, Sameer Kathmale believes that there is no wrong in playing aggressively. So the attacking is best defense and Sameer enjoys the game with same spirit. He likes to win the game while playing aggressively instead of playing safe. He has played near about 220 Chess events and he has been declared as winner for than 40 of them. Also, Sameer Kathmale has won 5 different All India Open Rating Chess tournaments. Viswanath being the Inspiration, Sameer is preparing his best to add more winning titles to his kitty.
Right now Sameer plays chess for about 5 to 6 hours on a computer and to learn more tricks he is also reading various books based on the game of chess. On the other hand he is also training many blooming chess players. Amazingly, 4 chess players are in the Sangli FIDE points table. So it seems that preparation for the game of chess requires a lot of dedication and Sameer Kathmale has been striving very hard to be the best amongst all the competitors. The FIDE Master – Sameer Kathmale has recently defeated three International Master's (IM) and one Grand Master (GM) in recently held Commonwealth Chess Championship organized at Chennai. Sameer has also drawn two matches with the Grand Masters (GM) who participated at Chennai Commonwealth Chess Championship. Right now the score of FIDE Master – Sameer Kathmale is 2340 points. Interestingly, to be a Grand Master (GM), a chess player needs a score of 2500 points.
Future Competition which Sameer will be playing is "World Junior U20 Chess Championships, 2013". The tournament is meant for chess player below 20 years of age and the event will be conducted at Antakya, Turkey during 11th to 26th September, 2013.
