Introduction of Alangudi Guru Bhagawan Temple


Alangudi Guru Bhagawan Temple is located at Alangudi in Thiruvarur District and 17 kms from Kumbakonam and near Neelamangalam. The main Idol of this temple was Lord Shiva as "Sri Abathsahayeswarar Swamy" and Lord Parvathi as "Elavarkuzhali". The temple is one of the famous Navagraha Temple for Lord Guru Dakshinamoorthy. The temple occupies an area about 1.25 acres surrounded by walls.

History of Alangudi Abathasahayeswarar Temple


One day, for nectar the Devas churning the Parkadal(Sea of Milk) obstruct by poisonous vapour from the snake Vasuki. The Vasuki prayed to Lord Shive, he used up to eat the deadly poison (Aala visham). So the sthalam of this temple called as "Alangudi" and also the Lord Shiva called as "Aabath Sahayeswarar". Lord Parvathi took severe penance for punishment and married Lord Shive in this temple, so the place is called as "Thirumana mangalam".

Lord Ganesha called as "Kalangaamal Kaatha Vinayagar" in that temple because of killed the Asura "Gajamuharasan" by safe from Devas. Brahma, Lakshmi, Garuda, Murugan, Ayyanar, Mukunda Chakravarthy, Sundarar, Vishwamitrar etc were worshipped in this temple. The temple is also a "Parigara Sthalam" and fourth from Panchavarunya's Sthalams.

Once Lord Shiva appeared as Boat man and helped Sundaramurthy swamigal to cross the vettaru river to reach sthalam. The boat was hitted on rock, so his rishaba vahana helped him to reach Sthalam safely.

The temple was built by Amuthorar, who was the Minister of King Muskunda Chakravarthy ruled Thiruvarur. The Minister was asked to share with the King the Punniya that he earned by being Lord Shiva's devotee. He refused to do so and was cut off the Minister head. The king got "Dhosam" and got by worshipping Abath sahayeswarar swamy at Alangudi.

There are around 15 theerthams in this temple. One which is located inside the temple as "Amrita Pushkarini".Alangudi is surrounded by 3 holy rivers. They are Cauvery, Kollidam and Vennaru. Chakra theertham is in front of the temple.Tham was created by Maha Vishnu's Chakra.
