The first Quake of magnitude 8.9 took place at 2.46pm local time, followed by 19 aftershocks, one as strong as 7.1. The quake affected the Nuclear power plant in Onagawa, but operator, of nuclear power plant Tohoku Electric Power confirmed no radiation leakage, even though a fire erupted in the turbine building. A total of 11 reactors at four nuclear plants were automatically shut down by the quake but no radiation leakage detected since now. But it is confirmed that small amount radioactive material had been released into the air to reduce the pressure inside the plant. But official are sure that the plant wont explode even though cooling systems of the plants are shutdown due to the quakes

One of the worst-hit areas was the port city of Sendai, in Miyagi prefecture were according police 200 to 300 dead bodies were found in one ward alone.
