V O Chidambaram pillai (1872 - 1936) one of the freedom fighters of Tamilnadu who opposed the British trade policy. He was the first tamilan to own a ship and formed a swedeshi steam navigation company. He imprisoned for several years. He took participated in the swedeshi movement initiated by Bal gangadhar tilak and Lala lajapat Rai.

V.O. Chidambaram pillai a well known Freedom fighters Tamilnadu. He born on 5th September, 1872 in the place called ottapiram near tuticorin. When the East India company came to India for business, he given a tough competition to the British company. He purchased two ships and started a swedeshi steam navigation company On 12 November 1906. With his two ships, he gave a tight competition to the ships of British. Those days, ships were employed in the route of tuticorin to Colombo. He had run his ship on the concession basis in the view to help poor Indian people which actually a challenging for the British. In return, the British ship company announced free trip to Colombo only in the aim to make V.O.Chidambaram pillai a bankruptcy and insolvent. After this announcement his ship have no passenger to make trip to Colombo. Finally, the company became insolvent with over credits. He was the first Tamilan of having his own ship company. He became the active worker in the swedeshi movement started by Bala Gangadhar Tilak and Lala Lajpat Rai during 1890-1900. In the meanwhile he ws arrested over the fake charge of sedition and put behind the bars for two year imprisonment from 1908-1910. He was extremely tortured in the jail not treating as a human he was used in place of bull to plough the field and untold difficulties. Due to these ill-treatment his health deteriorated day by day. He breathed last on 18 November 1936. The British always fear of V.O.Chidamabaram pillai for his bravery and as a intelligent trader for ever. We all must salute the great Freedom fighter Tamilnadu.
