Kali puja is a famous festival in all over West Bengal. It is otherwise known as Shyama Kali Puja in Kolkatta. The Kali Puja festival of West Bengal is not an ancient one. Kali Puja in West Bengal was practically unknown before the 18th century, But however a late in 17th century devotional text of Kalika mangalkavya by Balram mentions an annual festival dedicated to Kali. After that time Kali Puja is held in many parts of West Bengal with a Great pomp.
The King of that time Krishnachandra was declared for starting of the famous festival of West Bengal Kali Puja. As Kali Puja was started from 17th century but it gained the popularity in 19th century. The grandson of King Krishnachandra had made the festival famous. So now Kali puja is the biggest festival of West Bengal after Durga Puja.
There are many temples of Goddess Kali are situated or located in many pats of West Bengal such as Kalighat Temple, Dakshineswar Kali Temple etc. But the famous temple of Goddess Kali is Kalighat Temple which is situated on the Eastern bank on of Hoogli river which is considered as a holy place in Kolkata.
