The higher education department of West Bengal asked the West Bengal College Service Commission to conduct a common admission test to admit students in post graduate(PG) courses from 2013 session. Normally a student can get admission to PG courses on the merit of his/her obtained marks in graduation in erlier. Many of the brilliant students who got low marks accidently can't able to get admission in master degree. Therefore many truly talanted students lose eligibility to admit in PG courses as because of obtaining low marks. The system of admission in universities should be on the basis of marks obtaining in graduation and also performance in admission test so that truly talanted candidates can get entry in PG courses. Since a long period of times it has been claimed to change the admission system. Finally it has been done!
Every University always reserve a certain percentage of seats at the PG level for its own undergraduate students. The changed admission procedure would replaced such practice of universities. The state higher education council has been asked to laise with the commission work out the modalities for holding the test. The higher education council chairman Sugata Marjit had a discussion with the chairman of WB College Service Commission Mr. Siddhartha Majumdar a day ago to evolve a mechanism for conducting the entrance test. Several universities' vice-chancellors were present on that meeting.
The council recommended the universities to slash the quota for their home students at the post graduate level from 95 per cent to 60 per cent this year and conduct a entrance test to admit the students from the next year. Now it is necessary to make ammendment of the commission's act to hold the teat and the commission has no problem to act as a nodal agency of the test if the state government provides them with good infrastructure. So, far the college service commssion conducts the State Eligibility Test (SET) to recruit college teachers. Now the commission is required to deal extensively with the master degree syllabus and teacher experienced in the PG level syllabus. Then the commssion will get an advantage since the entrance test will also revolve around the master degree syllabus. Now several round of discussions will have to hold with among the commssion, council and department to find a detailed plan.
Now this new admssion system will bring the opportunity to get admmission in PG courses for all the students who never run for only marks! What do you think about the new PG admission system? Give your opinion in comment box.
