The Science City of Calcutta


Science City is one masterpiece work of science that the city of joy is proud of today. It is second only to that of Japan in the Asia and the most important landmark of Calcutta after independence. It was open to the common people of India after July, 1997. The long cherished dream has taken the shape of reality in the Dhapar Math of Calcutta, in the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. It remains open from 9 am to 9 pm every day except the national holidays.

Inside the Science City


The Science City has the Science center complex and the Convention center complex. The Science center has Space Odyssey, Evolution Theme Park, Dynamotion, Maritime center and a Science Park.

The Convention center has the Grand theater, one Mini auditorium and a Seminar Hall building. Some of the internal features, buildings and facilities of the Science City is as described below:

  • Space Odyssey: Inside the Space Odyssey, is the space theater run by the large format film display and special effect film projectors. It displays interesting science feature film shows like wildlife, etc., of 40 minutes duration. The hall has a sitting capacity for 360 people.

  • Maritime Center: Displays the marine history of India with crucial details and dates. Descriptions and artifacts show the shipping and the navigation system in an interesting way. The maritime structure shapes like that of a big ship and catches attention of the visitors.

  • The Science Park: The Science park provides an unique opportunity not only for the science enthusiasts but for the young kids, youth and the adults. One can grasp and enjoy the fun of science in the open surroundings. The butterfly nursery, fountains, the toy train ride, the overhead flying cable cars all add to the fun, beauty and charisma of science.

  • The Evolution Park: This park covers an area of around 1300 square meter and displays images and icons of ancient historic animals and plants. A perfect place that reflects the evolution of the animal life and species that are extinct now.

  • The Grand Theater: As the name suggests, one of the largest theater in the eastern India is the Grand Theater as it covers a huge area. Almost hundred artists can do a stage show and more than 2000 seats available for the viewers.

  • The Mini Auditorium: It is the most suitable one for small meetings, parties and shows. Around 30 persons can act in a stage show and around 400 hundred seats are available to the viewers.

  • The Seminar Building: It consists of 11 halls with seating capacities varying from 15 persons to 100 persons. There is a room to held small group meetings, workshops, conferences, etc.
