Historical Bakground Of Orissa
In a past Orissa was famous as kalinga, koshala, udra and utkal.All these Independent regions came under one administration which was known as Utkal or Orissa in the long run.During the british rule there were six districts in Orissa.They were cuttack,puri,balasore,sambalpur,ganjam and koraput.There were 26 other native feudal states which merged after independence giving rise to modern Orissa.The last of the native state to merge was mayurbhanj on January 1,1949.
Theancient habitants of Orissa were mainly the Odras and the utkals.TheOdras took possessionof the eastern plains upto kalinga in south Orissa, the territory of kalinga extended from ganga to Godavari.They had trade relations with java,Sumatra,sri lanka and bali etc.The nandasof Magadha were the first conquerors of kalinga.It attained independence after the downfall of the nanda dynasty.Emperor Ashok of mauryan dynasty had to fight with the people of kalinga in the year 261B.c. in the war at Dhauli near Bhubaneswar.After this war Ashok embraced Buddhism.
King Kharvela regained independence for kalinga in 183B.C. and become a great conqueror.Not much is known up the seventh centuary except for the satavahanasi rule during the first and second century.
In the year 342A.D. Emperor samudragupta,the rule of gupta dynasty, evaved Orissa.In 610A.D. Orissa came under the way of kind sasanka.After the death of sasanka his rival Harshavardhan conquered Orissa.During his period famous chiniese piligrim and traveler Huen tasang visited Orissa in 638A.D..He describe that Harshavardhan tried to propagate;the doctrine of Mahayana Buddhism in Orissa.About the middle of the 7st century the soma vansi dynasty was established in Orissa.Mahabhanu gupta (680-712A.D.)the first powerfull ruler of the line extended his kingdom upto modern cuttack.
He was succeeded by mahasiva gupta yayati (712-714A.D.) in 715A.D. mahasiva gupta yayati 11 it ascended the throne.He united kalinga,karigoda,utkal and kosala and revived the imperial tradition of Orissa under Kharavela.
His son and successor uddyot kesheri (840-880A.D.) was an illustrious ruler and builder.During his regin many temples were erected at Bhubaneswar.
Eastern gangas succeed the kesharis and ruled till 1435 will their capital at kalinganagar.The dynasty had fifteen kings and the most wellknown was cholagangdev.His kingdom extended from ganga to godavari.The world famous jagannath temple at puri built during his rule in the mild twelfth century.The notable and yet another tourist attraction,the sun temple at konark was built by king Narasingha deva,another king of the dynasty.The rule of the gangas was regarded as the golden period of art,architecture and sculpture in Orissa.The other illustrious rilers after this were kapilendra dev,Purushottam dev and Prataprudra dev of suryavansa or the solar dynasty.The last hindu rulers of Oriissa was Mukunda dev of bhoi dynasty in 1563.
The turko-afghan werev the first muslim rulers who came to Orissa in 1568A.D..They proved to be barbarians and destroyed the images in the temples of Orissa.
