It is one of the most magnificent forests of India located in the Mayurbhanj of Orissa. Similipal with its astounding flora and fauna is considered as a heaven for nature lovers. It has won the destination being a tiger reserve, a national park, a wild life sanctuary, an elephant reserve and a biosphere reserve.
It is spread over an area of 2750sq.kms and it has 12 rivers flowing within its limit, situated at a distance of 272kms away from the state capital and 65kms from Baripada. The most spectacular waterfalls in Similipal are the 390mt. Barehipani waterfall and the 150mt Joranda waterfall.
It is declared as a sanctuary in 1957.Its core area was converted in to a National Park in 1980.It is home to many unique varieties of wildlife. The semi-evergreen to dry deciduous forests of Similipal boasts of 1067 species of plants including 94 varieties of orchids. These forests echo with a variety of fauna comprising of 42 species of mammals, 231 species of birds and 29 species of reptiles. Out of 192 tigers of state 101 tigers are in Similipal as per the 2004 census. Besides other rare animals elephant,leopard,samber,spotted deer,barking deer,mouse deer,gagur,hill myna, hornbills,peacock,python,cobra,lizards add to the rich biodiversity of Similipal.

While the lovely pink orchids peeping from the greenery, serpentine rivers meandering through the jungles , cascading waterfalls , herds of jumbos walking leisurely across the jungles tracts,the roars of tiger reverberating in the atmosphere fills the visitor with adventure.
There are several bungalows in the forest and the best way to enjoy the nature and experience Similipal is to stay a night in these bungalows. Despite lack of modern amenities these forest bungalows come alive at night because the sound of tiger roaring that comes dividing the darkness of night. Similipal can give the visitors experience of life, by the way of Meghashani peak(1158mt) , perpetually covered by clouds appearing like a dream land in the sky. The peaks of Khairiburu(1178mt) has a breath taking beauty. Several river like Budhabalanga , Khairi , Salandi, originate from these the hills and flow through the thick of Similipal serving as an excellent habitat for many wonderful creatures.
