Rama Devi was the first women freedom fighter of Orissa. Smt. Rama Devi was the popular women freedom fighter of Odisha and she was born on 1899 in the small village of Satyabhamapur near Cuttack, Odisha. She was the first women freedom fighter in the state Odisha. Mr.Gopal Ballav Das was the father and Mrs. Basanta Kumari Devi was the mother of Rama Devi. She did not get the education from the School properly and she got her primary education through the private concern. Mrs. Ramadevi got married while she was 15 years old with Gopabandhu Chowdhury who he was a famous lawyer in Cuttack. Rama Devi's father and mother called her as Rama which was her nick name. The family of Rama Devi was basically rich and sophisticated and her father had served as a deputy Collector in the British government. She was the mother of two sons and one daughter.She lost her younger son when he was two and half years old. She had been forced to manage and run the family after her husband resigned the government and joined in the freedom movement.Freedom Fighter Smt. Smt. Rama devi was powerful women in Odisha by made her concern to upliftment of the women of Odisha. She had an ambition to help the poor people those who were living under the poverty line. She got confidence and self respect in all aspects and also advised the women to get their individuality and dignity. She became a good Patriotist by the teaching of her uncle who he was the brother of his father. She was honored by the doctoral degree of the Utkal University for her service and hard work. The government of Odisha started an women's college in her name at Bhubaneshwar which is the the capital of Odisha. Rama Devi also took part in the Gandhiji's "Salt Sathyagraha" and mobalized women to invole in that movement. Later, Mrs. Rama Devi appointed as Joint Secretary of the Orissa Branch of the "Harijan Sevak Sangha". She activated and involved in various social services in her life for the state and nation. She also involved in the Quit India Movement and also jailed for that activity. She became very close to Gandhiji during his visit to Patna and involved in many social activites like slum cleaning, helping for the Harijan women. She also implemented an orphanage for poor people at Satyabhamapur in Odisha which was called as "Kasturba Memorial Trust Centre". She did many social services through this trust in Odisha. After Gandhiji's assassination, She continued her social services with Mr.Vinoba Bhave who he was a famous freedom fighter in that age. The Shanti Sena Sangathana was started by Rama Devi to implement the peace and communal harmony among the people. She also implemented a cancer detection centre in Cuttack for the benefit of Odisha people. Smt. Rama Devi served and devoted many services to the state and nation as a freedom fighter, Social reformer, Patriotist. She is also living in every women's heart of Odisha. She did not involved in any negative activity and also not affected by any criticism in her life. She passed away on 22nd July, 1985 when she was 86 years old. Even she had assassinated from this this earth, the services of Rama Devi will speak about her as long as the world is live.
