Personal Profile of V. V. Giri


V. V. Giri, the former President of Independence India was born on 10th AugustProfile 1894 in a Niyogi Brahmin Family at silk city Berhampur of Ganjam Dist. The complete name of V.V. Giri is Varahagiri Venkat Giri. His father, Varahagiri Venkat Jogiah was an eminent lawyer by profession. He has completed his basic education from Madras and went to Ireland for studying Law. He got married to Saraswati bai at an early age.

V.V.Giri, as a Trade Unionist


During his law study in Ireland, he came across the influences of some great persons like De Valera, Collins, Pearee, Desmond Fitzgerald, MacNeil, Connolly and others. he got himself involved in Sinn Fein Movement. Because of that he was expelled from Ireland. The Irish Trade Union Movement had impressed him a lot. And after coming back from Ireland, he involved himself in Labour Movement in India. He was the founder of All India Railways Federation. He was elected twice as President of All India Trade Union Congress and. Several times, he went to jail by participating in labour movements. He attended the International Labour Conference at Geneva in 1927. He also participated in the Labour Congress held at Geneva.

V.V. Giri, as a Freedom Fighter


Giri had participated actively in Indian Struggle of Freedom Movement. He was also a great freedom fighter. During Nationalist movement he joined Home League and Indian National Congress. During the declaration of Non Co-operation Movement by Gandhiji, he left his bar practice and joined with the Movement actively. He was also arrested during this movement and sent to jail for a short period. He attended the Second Round Table Conference held at London in 1931-32 as the Worker's Representative. Giri did all his efforts to organize the Trade Unions during the Civil Disobedience Movement in early Thirties to support the nationalist movement. He was also the member of Indian Legislative Assembly from 1934-1937.

Political career of V. V. Giri


Father of V.V Giri was also a politician. He was the member of Swaraj party founded by Motilal Nehru. He was also a member of Legislative. The Example of his father and political background of his family has influenced Mr. Giri a lot and he was attracted towards politics. His Political Career was began in 1936, when he won the election against the King of Bobilli as a congress candidate. He became Minister Labour and Industries in 1937 in Madras Presidency. He was appointed as Commissioner of Independence India to Ceylon. In 1954, he was elected for the first time to Lok Sabha. He has held the post of Governer of Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore successfully.

He became the third honourable Vice President of Independence India in 1967. And he became the Fourth Honourable President of Republic India on 1969 after the death of Zakir Hussian. He was also conferred with the India's Highest Civilian Award, Bharat Ratna in 1975.

Conclusion

Apart from a great politician, team leader, he was also a prolific writer. He has written books of labour problems which include 'Labour Problems in Indian Industry' and 'Industrial Relations'. He was a great Social Worker too.

The Giri Street and Giri road situated at Berhampur is named after the eminent person Shri V V Giri.

He took his last breadth on 23rd June 1980.
